youre gonna haveta show some of the majic you perform here cause I do most of the cleanup and adding programing on my site Comics and Art. I get into some sticky sh*t and pull off some miracles too get out of it. but sometimes I have residual crap that I probebly cause being just an old Basic programmer (well learned that from my bro) that was back in the PDP1104 days before PCs came about!

Umm... what ever happened to the "five random pictures" thing? That was cool!

Had to take it out.

It was taking a very large amount of the site's processing power each time its viewed (appearently a [i]select ... order by random[/i] takes more resources than I thought), and during peak hours that was just killing the site.

I can understand that. A basic "order by random" function might look like:

for (ax=1 to [i]max[/i])
swap item[ax], item[random([i]max[/i])]

Kinda like shuffling a deck of cards. You can shuffle a deck of 52 cards easily enough -- but a deck of 100,000 is gonna put a strain on ya, especially if you have to do it several hundred times a day.

So, while I kinda miss the "Five Random Pictures" feature, I can see why it was taken out. (Besides, the entries in the "Last 3 Days" listing can easily be considered random images, or should I say subjects )

for those who may care about the technicial details (probebly only Stratadrake)

The order by random causes a full table sort which can take alot of RAM with almost 60000 pics. The site doesn't have alot of ram. See the problem? Swapping is slow....very slow. Due to that problem it often does a disk sort insted which is much slower. Also, I think the slow queries were causing deadlocking issues too.

I may make a random pictures page or somthing, or make my own random algerithm (load all the primary keys into an array and use PHPs random function to choose from them) but I question if that would be efficent enough either so I'll focus on more important features.

Ok, that makes sense. The randomizer would have a few thousand pictures to look through! I really like the todays pictures as thumbnails, btw. Its cool.
