Wow, paid members. [i]I'd[/i] definently pay to be a part of this site if it included all the best suggestions. But aren't you worried about the possibility that not many people would? I don't know how many members there are here, but I know alot of them just show up once in a while. I don't know, if you had just one paid member, then I guess that would be a plus. But then maybe you'll have a bunch of paid members, what do I know? Anyway, in my own opinion, it would be great to have all the cool stuff, even to pay for it. For this place, I think it's worth it.

[quote]I'm not sure how much I like this idea[/quote]
what's so wrong with wanting to know who your fans are? What if there's a fanclub out there with your name on it, wouldn't you want to know? WTF?

Another idea: since we, the members, will be nominating the Artists of the Months, why not have the runner-ups as honorable mentions? I know [i]I[/i] may never make Artist of the Month, but I may have a chance at an honorable mention, and I also know that many members may feel the same way. You could choose something like the first 2 or 3 runner-ups and name them 'Honorable Mentions'.

And don't forget about the "edit" button that appears on your posts, unfocused ;)

[quote]what's so wrong with wanting to know who your fans are?[/quote]

There's been suggestions for being able to see which artists have faved you (not just how many), but there's no implementation of that, yet.

A general lack of interest is one of the reasons why it hasn't been done yet. Paypal problems is another.
I hope to keep FAC always free, but I would like to offer paid accounts with additional premium features above the basic ones.

There are already too many nomonies to make that practical. People sugggest members. Site helpers choose which are selected. Every month Lasher randomly selects 2 names out of that accepted list.

Yup, so long as the basic functionality's still free (glances at dA and it's "only paid members can use the search function" <_< )

Okay then, time for some more suggestions.

1 - Ideas for more Site Stats trivia.
- Member with the most favorites on their profile
- Member with the most stories
- Longest story (highest # chapters)
- Most popular category (highest # submissions)
- Most diverse category (highest # submissions [i]from different artists[/i])

Oh, I also see the note on the Stats page saying that it's a bit computation-intensive. Any thoughts on caching/periodic updates for it?

2- Maybe some trivia stats for member profiles?
- Number of stories
- Most viewed picture/story
- Most commented picture/story
- Most faved picture/story
- Favorite category (highest # of their submissions)

I've also been thinking, a big and (undoubtably) complex idea, would be integration of a "requests" system into the main site. Basically, each member could have a "Requests" section of their gallery for pictures they want to see that other members can respond and leave links for.
- When a user has a new request, the form they fill out is similar to the fanfiction form. Name/category of the request, description and other info like what rating/content advisories will do (or will NOT do).
- When somebody else has filled the request, the form for filling the request is kinda like the comments form, but with a dropdown list for the person's gallery from which they choose the picture that they believe fills the request. Comments/responses left on requests can be managed just like any other comment.

Yeah, a pretty big idea which would involve a lot of coding. In the meantime, if we have requests that we'd like to share with the FAC members who don't check up on the forums, can we add them like a fanfic instead?

It IS cached, but doesn't get visited often enough for the cache to really make much differance.

[quote]I've also been thinking, a big and (undoubtably) complex idea...[/quote]
Interesting. May not get done anytime soon, but interesting.

[i]Very[/i] nice. That's the kind of stuff that catches my eye. Also, Stratadrake, I tilt my hat too your "requests" suggestion. *tilts hat*.

Idea 5.0: On the search results page, can you include more details with the pictures/stories discriptions, such as the pictures rating advisory and catagory/subcatagories. All that's there now is just the pictures name and the artist who done it.
Idea 5.1: Also, when you search, there are the options "Picture Name", "Description","Keywords" and "All" to narrow down your word search. When you search "All", it includes the artist names, but you can't just search for artist's names alone because there is no option for that, you gotta search for "All" to find an artist. And when you do that, you get everything that the search engine finds, when you're just looking for 1 person. Not a really big deal, but it bugs me for some reason.
Idea 6.0: instead of being e-mailed when one of your favorite artists submit new stuff, why not have a link to the latest picture your fav artist has done, or maybe just a small message letting you know your fav artist has submitted something new, or just show the date of their latest submission? It could be placed by their name on your fav artists/authors list? wouldn't it work similar to the new feature that shows if an artist has any fanwork pending?

Well, for the requests section, I'm deliberating copying down the design challenges I have and uploading them yo my section as a "fanfic" -- that is, if that's allowed.

[quote]wouldn't it work similar to the new feature that shows if an artist has any fanwork pending?[/quote]

Speaking of which, when I suggested that idea, I was thinking of it as something that you would see only on [i]your[/i] FAC profile page. It's a good stat, I was just considering that it's the type of thing that you only need to know when it concerns [i]you[/i]....

Yes, it [i]was[/i] an excellent idea, but I think our Evil Overlord improved your excellent idea (how's my butt-kissing?) by letting [i]everyone[/i] see an artists pending pictures. Anyway, this thread is a good idea in itself, allowing members to help out with the productivity of the home where their art is displayed. Although, you guys do all the hard work and we just sit back and enjoy it (life is sweet).

Does Denis still sell advertising space? or is it all for Google now? If it's still for sale, how can I find out a little about getting some? keep in mind that I'm just curious, I need to know alot more details before I think about getting serious.

yea i just thought that it would be nice to see the most recent pics first...specially when we are like lookin through certain categories cuz wen we go into them theres always like the same one there first, so to see new pictures you gotta really file through every single picture.

I just like to look at all the new stuff. ya know?

Category listings can already be sorted by artist, rating/content, and submission time. But I agree, it would be cool to have that functionality on the artist listings as well. I check on various artists from time to time, and I don't need (or really want) to see their entire gallery when I just want to see what's new....

Speaking of which, you know the sort methods?
Name (A-Z)
Name (Z-A)
Artist (A-Z)
Artist (Z-A)
Date (newest first)
Date (oldest first)
Rating (lowest first)
Rating (highest first)

Think we should give them better names sometime?
"By Title (A-z)"
"By Title (Z-a)
"By Artist (A-z)"
"By Artist (Z-a)"
"Newest First"
"Oldest First"
"By Content (G first)"
"By Content (G last)"

By the way, since "Name (A-Z)" is the default sort method, do we even need the blank entry at the top of the listbox for it?

PS: A few more ideas just occured to me.

- When we click on "Edit Profile" and update our bio or profile information, how about redirecting us to our FAC profile pages automatically after that to see what it looks like?
- When we delete a comment from our FAC profile or from a story, we should be redirected back to the FAC profile page or story (like what happens when deleting comments from a picture)

I'm still not comfortable editing my FAC profile info, i.e. with the password field on the same page -- can we have a separate form for changing/updating passwords and e-mail?

More ideas.

1 - Category sort methods. Okay, so the Javascript doesn't want to work on my NS browser, that's no big deal. But maybe, you know the headers at the top of the (non-thumbnails) listing? Artist/title/rating? Maybe you could turn those into links so that when you click on a category header, it sorts according to that header (or, if it's already sorted by that method, it switches between ascending/descending). Much like how listviews (Details/report listing, like the Windows explorer) work.

2 - Thumbnails pages. This is more of an issue for category and recent thumbnails listings than artist gallery thumbnails. Anyway, since I run my computer at 800x600, I can't help but get horizontal scrollbars when viewing thumbnail listings, because of members with usernames longer than Rhode Island. What do you think about reducing the thumbnails view from five columns wide to four? I get a little tired of having to scale down the text settings to about 80% so that I can fit all five columns in my screen.

3 - Other stuff mentiond before: sort methods and # of pictures per page options for artist galleries and the Recent Thumbnails listing would be grand.

I've been doing some thinking about the spacing issues. (They never end, do they? Rolling eyes) You know, if only there were some way to keep it from breaking up the formatting tags.... the [url] tag being currently worthless because of the spacing... wordwrap() appears to be called before the bb parsing, which is why it occasionally breaks it up. If it were applied after the bb parsing, it would probably just cause even [i]more[/i] problems since it'd be breaking up the longer HTML tags instead.

But in lieu of that, I looked at how the forums handle wide posts. Since in the forums, whenever one post is too wide, it only effects that post, the others remain at their original widths, I took a snippet from the HTML source, and it looks like:

[quote]<!--Begin Msg Number 210639-->

.
.
.

<!-- POSTED DATE DIV -->
.
.
.

.
.
.

<!-- THE POST 210639 -->
.
.
.

<!-- PM / EMAIL / WWW / MSGR -->
.
.
.

.
.
.
<!--Begin Msg Number 210746-->

.
.
.[/quote]

The forums put each post in a separate table element. I notice that when viewing a picture (pictures.php), the picture and its description are put in one table element, and the comments are put in another. If each comment was itself stored in a separate table element, and all table elements (picture description and comments) given a "width=100%" parameter, that would (in theory, at least) keep the descriptions and comments from "ballooning" out to the same width as a random, wide comment.

As it's a persistent nag, I almost hate to bring it up. Sometimes I wonder though, how other sites like DeviantART handle wide comments?

Another idea just came back to me. I see the sidebar category listing now displays which category you're in as well as its subcategories, that looks pretty cool. But I do notice that whenever you're viewing one picture in particular, the sidebar defaults to all main categories. What do you think, that when you're viewing one picture at a time, that the sidebar shows the category path & subcategory listing for the picture you're viewing?

Also, since I like to write long descriptions for some of my pictures, the Descriptions field on the submit/edit picture form is starting to feel a little small (4r x 35c). Think you could make it a little larger, maybe 8x40?

Finally, one last idea for today -- damn, I forgot what it was. Laughing Oh well, it'll come back to me later....

I haven't been using wordwrap in comments for a while now. I wrote a regular expression to deal with repeated characters, but it doesn't work.

[quote]But I do notice that whenever you're viewing one picture in particular, the sidebar defaults to all main categories[/quote]

Wanted to do that for a long time, but never happened due to some technicial reasons.

Oh.

BTW, it seems that whenever I update the description to any of my pictures, there are
tags in addition to normal crlf's. They aren't really needed anymore, are they?

Another few suggestions. Given the continuous stream of n00b after n00b asking "how do I upload pictures?!?", what about separating the "Add Fanwork" button into two buttons, "Add Picture" and "Add Story" ? It would also give a little more attention to the fact that yes, fanfics are allowed here too.

Also, when you move from one category to the next, the sort and amount settings should probably carry over. If I'm viewing the 20 most recent pics in one category and I click to go to a different category, shouldn't I be viewing the 20 most recent pics there and not the alphabetized first 100?

Earlier today I left profile comments for two users, and this idea hit me.

How about organizing the user profile info page so that when a person has a lot of favorites or user comments, it doesn't take forever to load?

Granted, this would require a lot of coding. For example, for favorite artists, pictures, and profile comments, break them up into pages of 25 or 50 or so. Maybe store them in an iframe?

ideas

6.0 -How about adding 'next' and 'previous' options in our art gallery for our pics?

7.0 -Maybe you can fix the miss grammatization "Is the on the 'Favorite artists' list of..." in our profiles.

8.0 -Instead of having a login page, just add the option on the front page, im sure you can make room to add a few text boxes somewhere, maybe just below the catagories

9.0 -How about having multiple pages for artists who have alot pictures. Something like 25 or 30 pictures per page.

oh, I'm back!
