It took about four years of a fan campaign, but:

There's an old RTS game called Warzone 2100, made by Pumpkin Studios and published by Eidos five years ago, back in 1999. But Eidos shut the doors on Pumpkin Studios because of bad budget decisions elsewhere in the company (Warzone 2100 was actually a great game and sold a decent amount).

Devoted fans remained in communities working on extending and modding the game, and began a fan campaign to see the game's source code released.

And now . . . it finally happened! The game's source code released under GNU GPL terms.

It's not very often that stuff like this happens, eh?

I have doomsday on my pc, which is an openGL version of doom 1 and 2 with 3d models and light effects, fanmade.

Another frequent thing is remakes as mods for newer games and thus game engines. For example you always see goldeneye remakes for HL and UT or marathon remakes. A nice one is the halo remake for ut2004, but in the fps genre, you see more moddability in general than in other gametypes.
