how long does a picture take to get approved??

It depends on when you submit it and when one of the approval team members are on.
But it shouldn't take more than a few hours let alone a day T.T and even then that's adding a lot of time.....

If you submit at night (night North America time) it may take up to 8-10 hours depending on wether there are approval members up late or early.

what makes them not aprove of your art?

If it breaks the rules generally.
There are occasions where we'll reject something because it's stolen, but it's basically a way to keep people following the rules and make sure it's filed correctly (it also has to follow the quality controls...which just means that you have to be able to see what it is and it can't be on lined paper.)
