3d art

Clean lineart
cell style animation
Anything you need transparency in
anything animated
Only supports 256 colors/shades

Generally for scanned images you'll want jpeg, for computer made stuffstuff (except as noted above) gif.

PNG is kinda a combination of the advantages of both formats. has better transparency support than gif.
