BMP = "bit map". The contents of a BMP file are a direct copy of how it appears in memory, thus compared to other image formats, BMP files can be loaded from the hard disk for display VERY quickly. Unfortunately, this also means zero compression!
To change a file from one format to another, on your Save As dialog box, open the "Save As Type" dropdown list and examine your options.
