Sonic And Tails In Ssbm

I read an issue of EGM that said you could unlock sonic and tails in SSBM, and thought that was a cool idea, than read the next issue that said the whole thing was an april fools joke... I believe that it cannot be done, and that it was, in fact, a joke... besides that... why would they put a sega character into a nintendo based video game anyway... let me no if it's true, or total bullscat!!!
