|
|
What types of art can I submit to my FAC gallery?
The goal of Fanart Central is to be a website for fanart, though we do welcome original art also. Keeping that statement in mind, we have specific rules about what types of art can, and can NOT, be submitted to FAC:
Disclaimer: The following is not an official copy of FAC submission policy, but is instead an explanation and interpretation of what our submission policy is and means.
Only artwork created by YOU is allowed in your FAC gallery.
This generally means one of the following:

Drawings (dry media, i.e. pencils, charcoal, crayon, etc. drawn by you), as captured by a scanner or digital camera

Paintings (wet media, i.e. watercolor, airbrush, oils, acrylics, tempera, etc. painted by you), as captured by a scanner or digital camera

Digital Artwork (computer drawings & paintings developed from scratch by you)

Craft items (e.g., sculpture), as captured by a digital camera

Arrangements of multiple creations each made by you, such as collages or montages.[/list:u]
As a rule, we can NOT allow the following types of artwork to be submitted:

General Photography. That is, photography of ANYTHING OTHER THAN paintings, drawings, or craft items created by you. This applies both to stock imagery as well as original (your) photography, because as outlined above, FAC is not intended as a website for displaying photography; FAC is not Photobucket. You may, however, use stock photography as a background layer underneath a drawing or painting that you created, but photography as a medium itself is not allowed.

Official Art. Anything that is legally owned and copyrighted by a commercial studio, including but not limited to:
- Conceptual, pre- or post- production artwork, including box cover and/or poster art of or advertising movies, TV shows, videogames, anime, etc.
- Screenshots/screencaps from TV, anime or cartoons, video games, etc.
- Bitmaps downloaded (ripped) from videogame source disks, cartridges, or ROM's (i.e. Videogame Sprites)

Artwork belonging to another artist or user. Again, Fanart Central is intended as a place for you to show off fan artwork that YOU created, not merely artwork that you found, liked, and want to show other users in general. Note, however, that collaborative works produced by an agreement from multiple artists (such as applying color to another user's lineart), can be allowed, if we can actually verify that such an agreement took place between you and the other artist(s).[/list:u]
Because of the above, we similarly do NOT allow:

Videogame Sprites. Any submissions which incorporate or directly re-use a videogame bitmap graphic (or "sprite"). Please understand, videogame sprites in fact ARE copyrighted material and we cannot allow their use in an FAC submission at all. This means:
- Sprite "edits" -- drawing, recoloring, and/or re-painting directly over an official sprite -- is not allowed.
- Sprite "comics" -- use and arrangement of official sprite graphics, with appropriate text and/or captioning to create doujinshi -- is not allowed.

Manips. Pictures created through the modification of existing Official Art. Regardless of what "edits" you made to the picture, this does not change the fact that the source art itself DOES NOT COMPLY with FAC submission rules and cannot be allowed.

The above rule also extends to "generator" or "doll" submissions, where the base character and/or features (clothing, hair, etc.) are pre-assembled by another user and your only involvement is to choose certain features and arrange them as desired.

Photo Manips.. Editing, refiltering, warping/skewing, or other manipulation of General Photography for use as a submission. For the same reasons as a general Manip. The original source is still itself not allowed, so the modified result cannot be allowed either.

Collages, montages, and arrangements featuring any combination of the above non-allowed materials. Note that this does not include collages, montages, or arrangements assembled entirely and exclusively from your OWN artistic creations.[/list:u]
Finally, we cannot allow:

Desktop Screenshots. Images taken with the PrintScreen key or another screen-capture utility. These may be allowed on other sites such as deviantART, but not here on FAC, especially considering that many desktop wallpapers are created from General Photography or Official Art and thus would not be acceptable anyway.

Graphics intended solely for use as website elements (buttons, backgrounds, textures, or icons). The purpose of FAC is to be gallery for Fanart, and not as a repository for just any imagery in general.[/list:u]
Can I submit a photo of myself, as a self-portrait?
No. It's still a form of General Photography, and cannot be allowed as stated above. You may, however, upload a photo of yourself as part of your user profile (non-gallery) page, forum avatar, to the Photos forum thread, or so on.
You mean I can't submit ANY Photography? But it's a form of Art too....
Remember, FAC is for fanart, not photography. We're not Photobucket. That's why we have chosen to not allow it.
Can I make creative edits (such as improved colors) to an official image or screencap and submit it to my gallery?
No., this is what we call a "manip" -- regardless of what changes you make to an existing picture, or whether you credit the original artist or not, this does not change the fact that the source image IS still copyrighted to someone else. Phrased more simply, you may never simply make edits to someone else's picture and call the result your own -- doing so constitutes a form of Art Theft and will be punished.

And doll edits aren't allowed either, right? I've seen quite a few of those floating around. I think that falls along the lines of sprite edits, but not everyone gets it. _________________ |

I have a few old dolls in my gallery (ah, the memories), but I pixeled the clothes and hair myself, and credited the basemaker.
I think those should be allowed, because it's the same principal as stock-photo-backgrounds.
But yeah, edits of pre-made dolls... ugh. I saw one th other day. She added balls to the hair and changed some colors and called it Sailor Moon, wtf. _________________ FAC |

What is the policy on artwork directly copied from either an official source or another fanartist?
I assume that it is allowed because I have seen several cases of obviously traced art in multiple galleries. I just want to make sure that this is legal, because I'd feel bad if they were in violation of policy and I did nothing to correct the situation.
Thanks for clearing this up for me. |

Actually, direct re-use (i.e. copying/tracing or minor alteration) of another artist's picture falls under the same policy as direct re-use of official art: Not allowed.
Violations may be reported to site staff, but you'll need to have some proof (i.e. a source image) in hand for FAC staff to compare it with, and determine if it qualifies as a direct copy. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

 Not really. There's a huge difference between drawing over a stock photo and calling it one's art and drawing over someone else's art and calling it one's art.
Someone once told me that doll bases are not allowed whatsoever seeing as how it's like editing sprites, so are all dolls drawn on bases found on the internet consdered policy violations, or only ones assembled in a doll maker? What I mean is... if the person drew only the clothes but found the body elsewhere online, is that allowed or not? _________________ |

Well the difference between editing sprites and pixelling clothes onto dolls is that sprites aren't made to be edited, and doll bases are.
And considering most of those dolls are free to use, I don't see why they shouldn't be allowed. As long as you pixel the hair/clothes/accessories yourself and not give the doll pre-made things. _________________ FAC |

Still wondering what the final judgment on this is, and could their be a mention about dolls in the rules on the main site so that no one can complain after their assembled dolls are deleted? _________________ |

Press the "Add fanwork" button at the top.
It should be saved to your computer.
Add a description, the category, how you made it, title, rating, and the picture itself (By hitting browse and finding it.) _________________

That's a question for a different topic, but... to answer it anyway... first you need either a scanner or a digital camera; that's how you get your drawing from paper "into" the computer. Once you have your drawing copied into a file, THEN you can upload it to your FAC gallery.
Or are you already at that point and are having trouble with the FAC submissions process? _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA

I have a pretty good grasp of these, but one still eludes me, kinda-sortof.
It pertains to the general photography section. I do paint work on various things from automobiles to golf clubs you name it I probably painted one.
My question is this, Would a photo of a paint job I have done qualify as general photography or a photo of artistic capability and/or creativity?
This is giving me trouble in understanding simply because I know painting designs on steel and titanium is not the same as painting designs on canvas. On top of that wile some see the paint work in a picture like that, others don't, they only see a car, plastic model, file cabinet, golf club and so on.
No, I'm not asking if I can build my portfolio here, I prefer analog photographs for that (harder to manip.) I am just asking if stuff like this is acceptable

*EDIT* This is something I would not likely submit often, bit may proove handy in some respects of witch I can't think of at the moment. _________________ RPG-n. yes its allowed, as long as YOU actually painted it, what you can't post is artistic photos, although you can post photos of your art.... _________________
