Have you heard of Symphony X? A progressive rock band, they choose to retain certain sound signatures of the 80's and 90's, and achieve this mainly through their vocalist. They're fairly similar to Dream Theater (at least many people try to compare the two) in that they blend in alot of instrumental and even, at times, jazzy elements. However, none of that truly describes them - their talent level is simply astonishing. Their lyrics are usually a recount of tales from old mythology. I must tell you though, that they are still fairly metal-oriented. But they employ musical elements from practically every style of music that exists. They're an all american band, however they were signed to a japanese label. They're huge in Europe and Japan.
They recently got a page at myspace, although the clips there are not even their best stuff, but they'll add more soon.
Their guitar player, who started the band, was named one of the top 100 guitarists that ever lived (by Guitar World) - up there with the likes of Malmstein and Uli Jon Roth and such...
Check'em out - might be something you like...

I like em'. Much more of a hollow but solid sound than what gets labeled 'metal' nowadays. that man definitely deserved to be in the top 100. |
