I have an image that I originally uploaded in JPG. I wanted to re-upload it in PNG, so I went and did so. But the JPG image still exists instead of the PNG. What the deuce happened here?

Most fileformats (png may be one, I forget) are converted to jpeg automatically. In most cases because they have to be, in the case of png because I've found jpeg tends to offer better compression on average and can still maintain good quality if the compression level isn't set too high.

If the image contents are different and you are still seeing the old contents most likely you are just looking at a cached version because the filename is the same. Its also possably because the picture didn't get synced over to the picture server you are looking at, if so it'll fix itsself in a day or so when I next run a manual sync.

That's unfortunate if PNGs are automatically compressed, as approximately 50% of the time (especially with my smaller images), the PNG is smaller datawise than the same image as a JPG. This is in addition to the fact that PNGs are better aesthetically.

It was not changed this morning (there is a minor content change to the image which did not appear on the re-uploaded version), so I changed the filename and uploaded it again. Hopefully this time it is just a syncing snafu.

I appreciate your help.

Changing the filename on your end won't do anything. Images are renamed to their ID when uploaded.

as for PNGs being smaller. The thumbnails uses to be png files. I changed them to jpeg because the jpeg files were much smaller (like 5 times smaller or something).

There are plans to allow a little more flexability in the submission formats when I have time to program it.

I just ran a picture sync so if it still doesn't work either the upload failed or you still have it cached.

Ah. That's a misunderstanding on my part, then. My apologies.

It hasn't worked, and I've cleared my cookies twice since the initial re-uploading. I will just forget about the updated version and wait for such an event to occur.

I salute you and your efforts.

In the meantime, do you have an image manipulation program (that's not MSP, lmao)? Most programs allow you to manually set the compression of the jpeg so you can convert it to jpeg without losing any quality.

Without losing noticable quality... JPEG always loses a litle bit, that's the nature of its compression.

Indeed. That's what I meant. But, who's to say it's lost quality when they've not knowledge of the original~?

Actually, don't answer that. D;

Ah, I didn't think of that. What a dunce I am! Perhaps I will attempt to use The Gimp for this solution!

EDIT: Ah, it worked! Thank you all!
