I've only seen Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle and parts of Nausicaa, because my friend wouldn't stop talking through it.
I really love Miyazaki's films, especially the characters and how developed their personalities are.
My favourite is Spirited Away, I adore Haku! And the plot is just amazing, always something new and totally unexpected! _________________ |

Princesss mononoke is my favorite movie. It's animation, the story, everything was what a movie should be. Grandeur unrivaled by any other of his movies except maybe Nausicaa. |

I cry so much when I watch his films... *laugh* It's not just because I'm such a sap... his films are so well done that he could make soldiers wail like a baby, I'm sure... Currently I want to order Whisper of the Heart, because I they don't sell it in stores... it's an older one, 1995, I think. But I want to see them all! They're all amazingly beautiful! |

(Don't you love bumping up topics? X3)
I adore Miyazaki-sama's flims! My personal favorites are Howl's Moving Castle, My Neighbor Totoro and Porco-Rosso (or however it's spelled) They were really great flims. ^^ I especially loved Porco since it was Italian based and it had alot of comedy! Though I LOVED Howl's, animation was amazing, characters were fantastic and voice acting was great! I got to see a special screening of it, a week before it came out in theaters nation wide ^^ |

So, as you've probably heard, the latest Miyazaki movie is scheduled to be released soon, although it's being directed by Goro Miyazaki, Hayao Miyazaki's son. Ged Senki (English title is Tales from Earthsea, but the literal translation is more like 'Ged's war history') is based on Ursula K. LeGuin's Earthsea series, and has been receiving ridiculous amounts of advertising over in Japan. Er, maybe it's that way for any new Miyazaki film - I've never been in Japan for the release of a Miyazaki movie before...
I can tell you now that the characters look like any other Miyazaki character. Actually, what really surprised me was seeing this really cute guy in chains and realizing that it was supposed to be Ged. He looks a lot like Ashitaka from Mononoke Hime, and that was very shocking to me because Ged, like many (or perhaps most?) people in the Earthsea world, is supposed to be dark-skinned. Well, that's Japan for you, I guess. D: The movie also involves a girl, although I'm not sure if it's supposed to be the girl from the second Earthsea book or what, since there weren't any significant female characters in the first book. Heh, another thing that makes the film very Miyazaki is that the theme song has the typical quiet, calm, and sung by a female thing going on. I personally think it's boring.
The release date for Ged Senki is July 29th. I'll go see it when I get the chance. Is anyone else familiar with the Earthsea series, and if so, what parts do you think will show up in the movie? What do you think of the change in skin color (maybe I shouldn't take such offense to that, but it did make me rather sad)? Anything else you can think of? Let's talk Miyazaki! |

I have the same complaint with Miyazaki that people have with Don Bluth, he never changes his style and it's getting a bit stale.
The stories are cute and tear-jerking and inspirational and all, and his non-human monsters are great, but the style he draws people in is just getting so bland that I don't watch Miyazaki films until someone makes me sit down and forces me to. Once I do, I'll usually enjoy the movie, but I'll never belong to the hoardes of Miyazaki fans who go out and buy art books and wane on about how fantastic all of his stuff looks. _________________

Yeah, I wasn't much interested in Kiki or etc, and Spirited Away was mediocre for me. Pretty good music, but really, really random, and a bit illogical. I just seemed to be... missing a little.
My all-time fav is just Princess Mononoke. Absolutely top fav movie. The ending was sad, sure, but c'mon, it was perfect. Disney happy endings make me twitch.
And the characters... San is just awesome, and the animals.
I have pieces of the soundtrack. Beautiful.
I watched Nausicca last, somewhere in china with poor chinese subs and japanese, so I never really understood quite everything that I was going on. It was an okay music, and that little 'lalala' tune is stuck in me, but otherwise, only mediocre. Watching it without translations, it does seem to be just another carbon copy of mononoke, only not so good. The gas masks freaked me out at first, though I do love the bugs. And that fire giant.
Otherwise? The boy and the warrior woman/queen who lost her arm only played minor roles, and it just overall wasn't as stunningly done as mononoke. Kinda weird category of sci-fi there.
So.
Mononoke tops. |

Honestly, I rather enjoy a lot of those Disney movies from the early-mid 90's. They're well-crafted with an unparalleled quality of animation. They can appeal to various age groups, and have given many people fond, nostalgic childhood memories.
I find that most people who whine about Disney's happy endings just want to complain because Lawl Disney's 4 kiddies. Or they're going through their goth phase. So what if a movie has a happy ending? Every so often it's nice to see something end on a positive note. Doesn't matter if things don't always turn out super in real life, it's an animated fantasy movie.
I like Kiki and Totoro because I have fond childhood memories attached to them. I like Mononoke and Spirited away because they're well-crafted movies with an engaging atmosphere. I've yet to be overly enchanted by any of his other movies, though. _________________

:is getting off topic:
Well, I don't hate disney just because I hate happy endings, as they're okay. But I did dislike the fact that they kinda... changed the facts.
I saw mulan, and for 2 years afterwards, I honestly believed she saved china from evil invading mongol hordes on her own.
I doubted the fireworks and the assistance of the dragon and cricket, but honestly.
Wait until I found out the truth.
:back on topic:
I'm not a complete Miyazaki obsessionist either, but I do want to see Howl's moving castle, as I've heard a good deal about it.
I just seriously thought nausicca was just mononoke redone, and not as good.
Still real original ideas though, and pretty cool background to nausicca.
I come from chinese descendants though, so I never saw any miyazaki films as a little girl. Chinese and Japanese kinda hate each other, y'know?
Plus that made the whole mulan thing worse. :[ |

Haha, Nausicaa being a remake of Princess Mononoke? There's probably a ten-year lapse between the two - Nausicaa is much older, and based on a manga drawn by Miyazaki. I haven't read the manga, but I'm sure it's pretty good. I really enjoyed that movie when I watched it, but that was a while back and now I hardly remember it.
I'm especially attached to Totoro and Princess Mononoke. I love the former because it's a movie that I grew up with. I'd watch it all the time, even though I had no idea what anyone was saying (we had an ancient VHS copy that one of our relatives taped while in Japan). Mononoke Hime was the first anime that I saw that I knew was anime (and not just a cartoon) and it really got me interested in the anime art style in general. Plus, it was far more violent than we'd expected - my parents were shocked by the scene early on when Ashitaka is busy shooting body parts off with his arrows. XD
Howl's Moving Castle was all right, but it's a bit of a letdown if you've read the book. Spirited Away was very good, but the fangirls who are all 'OMG, Haku is so hott!' make me cry. I guess the same goes for Howl fangirls. o_o;
One of my favorite elements in Miyazaki films is his ability to fit whimsical/weird/creepy creatures into everything. Those soot balls in Totoro and Spirited Away, or all the bathouse tenants in Spirited Away... I remember being seriously confused by the kodama in Princess Mononoke. ^^; |

Every movie ever made -ever- changes the facts. Don't single out Disney. That's like saying McDonalds is the only fast food chain out there pumping America full of greasy burgers.
I chalk it up to artistic liberty. They're just adding to the mythology of it all. Sure, the Little Mermaid didn't commit suicide and turn into sea foam, but is it really so bad that she gets her happy ending and runs off with Prince charming? Is it really all that dissappointing that Cinderella's ugly stepsisters weren't brutally tortured, or do the morals of the story hold even without that vindictive bit of revenge? Does the Beast really need to die to get the message across that you can learn to love and respect someone you're originally repulsed by?
These are all stories that are rewritten and exaggerated over the years. The only difference between Disney and every other person who's ever done their own take on an old story is that Disney has the funding and manpower to make a multi-million dollar motion picture out of it.

Heh, I think if I ever get to see Howl's Moving Castle, I'll be mentally subbing over Howl with Patrick Bateman from American Psycho through the whole thing.
And that just makes the movie enjoyable on a whole new level. _________________

I absolutely adore Miyazaki! I have seen Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa, Howl's Moving Castle, Ki Ki's Delivery Service, My Neighbor Totoro, and Spirited Away. My favorite would probably be a three way tie between Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's Moving Castle. All three were his best when it comes to the animation. |

Right now I have seen Castle in the sky, Howl's Moving Castle, Spirited away, and my neighbor totoro |

This evening, I happened to walk by a theater that was playing the lastest Ghibli film, Ged Senki (Tales of Earthsea). Since the next showing was ten minutes away, I ended up paying the 1800 yen admission and watching it. The movie ended up being based on the fourth book, Tehanu, and I was upset because I've only read the first two in the series and so spent most of the movie trying to decide whether any of it was familiar or not. However, after looking over a brief summary of the book, perhaps it's better this way because I think a lot has been changed for the sake of the movie.
The movie was good, but not amazing. The animation seemed kind of flat, especially at the beginning, and parts of the movie seemed random and pointless (lol, two minutes of annoying singing in the middle). I also missed the abundance of wacky/strange critters that have shown up in earlier Ghibli films, but I guess there was no place for that sort of thing in this film. Still, the backgrounds were love, and I was extremely glad to see that the cute boy in all the advertisements was not Ged after all (Ged's middle-aged after all!).
I was a little bit fuzzy on some parts, especially a lot of dialogue in the beginning of the film, but I'd say I was able to understand 75% of it. Maybe a bit more. Much much better than the FMA movie that I watched last summer - I was lost for most of that one. e_e |
