I understand and often employ the use of reference material. More often than not I will use it for only a couple aspects of the character I am working on, but now and then I will make a direct duplicate of the original work for one reason or another. I however do not sign the work and I will state that I copied from such and such location and/or show the reference I used.

For example:
[quote]These are direct copies more or less. I drew them to get the character better into my mind, flow into an original or I had plans for the work. I'll include those aspects in the descriptions.

reference: yes, shone in first
altered:yes, reversing of one(minor)
color: color, the only things needing color at this stage are the eyes so, you may not pick it up.
Complete: not by a long shot, I am sort of making an original beastie that will be placed beneath them on the page

I am asking if it is legal to make a direct reference copy, sign, date it and call it yours?

This question comes to mind with a gallery in mind. There are images that are clearly hand drawn, signed and dated that I know I have seen elsewhere and even have a couple on my computer at home. One that springs immediately to mind is a wallpaper I used for a wile.

If this is legal, I won't wast the time of the abuse staff further, but if not I will make the report threw the PM.
