his is almost non-news since it seems unlikely to me, but I'll post it here for the idea alone.

Zhang's business partner Zhang Weiping was quoted as saying last Monday that Zhang Yimou and Spielberg have expressed an interest in working together, and that a possible project would be "Journey to the West."
That's still four books squished into a single movie, although I can see how gobs of adventures could be lopped off since they're so encapsulated, even if the number of calamities that befall the monk and his disciples has a significance in the original story. |

WHOA. That's going to be interesting to see. [I being chinese, that is, and completely knowing the 'journey to the west' and having seen about, say, at least 4 different versions of it. ]
Should be cool. I wanna see how he does the monkey. 8D
And I shouldn't bring this up, but I will be comparing this to Kazuya Minekura's Saiyuki anyways. You've seen four versions now? That must've been fun. The books are definitely one of my top favorite stories. |

I'm chinese. Saiyuki [for conciseness now] has been redone SO many times.
Cartoons, real-person... The real-life acting series was pretty good, really. Over 100 episodes, and though slightly childish at times and done with some pretty crappy CG at times [heh] but it's overall got a rather classical feeling and whatnot.
And it still plays on Chinese public television.
Still, this has really piqued [sp?] my interest in how Spielburg will do this, as in, a more... uh, European way. Hurm. _________________ |

A friend living over in China gave me a web link once to a website about a live-action television series of it; perhaps that was it. I recall an animated version was dubbed in English called in the English version, Alakazam the Great, but I've heard that the English version mangled the original horribly, so I have not sought it out. I watched a couple episodes of another version on U.S. television, called Monkey Magic, but lost interest when it appeared to be diverging greatly. I have a vague memory of a U.S.-produced television special that had The Monkey King and was meant to be educational about the books, but didn't attempt to tell the story I guess due to the undertaking.
I read Outlaws of the Marsh because I learned the game Suikoden was inspired in part from it, and I did read it all, but I found I liked Journey much more.
(You spelled piqued 100 % correctly.) |

Jesus... Outlaws of the... Marsh... I knwo what Suikoden is based on, but I only knew the Chinese name. ^_^; Wowee, you english translators...
Yeah, I once told my mom that Suikoden was based on the chinese legend. She blatantly refused to believe. XD
However, she did find Dynasty Warriors rather interesting.
Ah, cultures.
Well, in the live-action piece that I watched, I was always startled by the monkey's [Goku's] golden eyelids. When he blinked, there was some gold stuff there.
I was quite confused.
But the series was, and is still good for all ages. _________________ |

Thank you for the live series recommendation. I will keep my eyes open for possible subtitled editions.
Checking amazon.com, I see there are other editions of Shui Hu Chuan that're called Water Margin rather than Outlaws of the Marsh. I feel some surprise that there is a Shaw Brothers VCD movie apparently based on the story as well.
Have you read Romance of the Three Kingdoms? I was curious if you thought it was interesting, as I haven't read it yet. |

Oh, jeez, it takes me a sec to translate these. XD
3 kingdoms... I've partially read through some of the books. However, my chinese really isn't up to par [I was born and raised in america ] so I do wonder if there's an english version, as to be honest, that'll be easier for me.
I can understand chinese fine when hearing it, but reading is a pain.
The Suikoden series was also interesting to me, and saiyuki's plotline is already embedded in me. _________________ |

Checking amazon.com, I see there are indeed a number of editions of Romance of the Three Kingdoms available in English. One version has four volumes and another has five. I see that an English translation of Dream of the Red Chamber is also available. |

::twitch:: Yet again, those names... I heard about the Dream of Red Chamber before, and my mom got me to read a bit of it. But it was rather boring.
The 3 kingdoms and Suikoden [suikoden is actually a pretty close translation to what the title sounds like in chinese] ones are more interesting to me.
Now I should go to amazon. >>; _________________ |
