LOZ Ocarina (GC version w/ master quest) need help

I'm trying to complete as much of the young Link stuff as I can before I open the door of time. I'm currently selling masks but I cant seem to find the running man so that I can give him the bunny hood. I have checked all over Hyrule field but, I don't see him any where. I have 2 differant stratagy guides, including the official NP guide but, niether one can tell me exactly how to find him. They just say running around Hyrule field after recieving the bunny hood. I'm playing the normal version on the master quest bonus disk.
Is there some thing I'm missing?

he is only out at NIGHT to give him stuf. and he's runing around at night

also, follow the path until he stops running. then, you can talk to him
