I uploaded a new user avatar, but when I continue posting in the forums, I still see the old one. Why?

This is generally a caching issue -- your Internet browser stored a copy of the old avatar, and basically hasn't realized that you changed the avvie to something else. (Note that if the avatars are differing sizes, the old avatar will appear squished/stretched/etc. to fit the new avatar's dimensions.)

You can also Refresh (or Reload) the current page, and your new avatar should display correctly. Other people will still be able to see the new avatar you uploaded, and the issue will also resolve itself in time (depending on your browser's cache settings).

I have refreshed the page but still the new avatar doesn't show. How long does it normaly take for an internet browser to recognize it? It's has been a day so far.

The exact time depends on the size of your browser's cache and/or History settings.

On Firefox (as well as Netscape), hitting the Reload button generally won't refresh images on the page, only the page itself. To refresh everything, hold Shift while clicking on the Reload button. (Or, also on Firefox, view the image separately and then reload that)

I could not understand what you said by Reload button and what not but I can see it now after the weekend so thankyou anyway. I seem to have only needed to wait.

Thankyou....... now where did I put that computer manual?

Large avatars are automatically thumbnailed down to dimensions of 64x64. Sometimes the thumbnailing doesn't work properly, so for best results, try to shrink your avvie image down to that size before uploading.

For that information, see the resizing Q&A.

Could I use a sprite for only my avatar, or would that be against site rules?

Avatars are generally exempt from the rules of copyright defined in the submission policy.

Er...I'm new to this site, so sorry if I'm going about this wrong...this says reply but I just have a question! Crying or Very sad And I don't know what to do.

1.) My avatar...is that the picture that is next to a comment text that I write? That is always displayed??
-when I first logged in...it asked me what I wanted my avatar to be...I didn't know what that was, so I ignored it, but now that I think I know what it is..I don't know how to get to it to actually PUT a picture up!
-Right now all it's showing is the "cat" thing picture... WTF? in the little box(that's the avatar right??) and I have no clue how to get to my profile to change it. I mean, I know how to get to my profile..but when I go there..it says nothing about an "avatar"...... Sad I just want to beable to have a picture I want up.
Please..can someone help explain to me the steps on how to change it from the cat picture, to one you want???

Thank you.

I'm sure we have an FAQ topic about avatars, but for short, you can't change your user avvie in the forums, you have to do it from your main FAC profile page.
