As long as we're discussing manga and not anime, naruto is free from the greater part of my scorn. However, the series' author kishimoto's favortism concerning his characters came to have too big of an influence on the story after the initial start, increasing their abilities substantially(especially sasuke) in such a way that underminded the story's main theme of there being no shortcuts in life. Eventually, the central characters are escalated to a point of near-omnipetence, and any story that might have existed prior was quickly eclipsed by a contest of 'who is the most powerful' and more mexican stand offs than you could shake a fake kunai at. Then y'know what happens next? He pulls a Toriyama(again) and fastforwards through time, and introduces a slew of powerful characters 'stronger than anyone our heros have ever faced' and the 'jin-juuriki' plot becomes subordinate to this new power contest before it is even allowed an exposition.
As for bleach, It was built on a rotting foundation, and i think kubo knew this when he started out. for one thing, the key to bleach's execution is design. The generic shinigami garb is exempt from this for some reason, but the ghosts, the system of the spirits, everything has a fresh angle. the manga is also the first iv'e read out of shonen jump to employ any symbolism techniques(bear in mind that i gave up on shonen jump a while back and have only recently picked it up again), if only for a single time, during urahara's explanation of an influx of souls or something or other. It also doesn't take itself as seriously as naruto does, and there are a lot more humorous moments dispered throughout it.
As for chad, well he's mexican. Mexicans tend to have darker skin than asians. that was a silly comment to make, really.
BUT.....
as soon as icho leaves for the soul society, things turn sour really quick.
immidiately, the reader is assaulted by new characters and little incentive to care about them. during the seemingly endless 'rukia tied up in the ribbons' saga, many of these new faces are introduced not through short vingettes, not through a furthering (or rather introduction) of a plot, not even through narrative.
No, they are introduced through a series of dbz style character vs character fights, and the dreaded 'call out the attack name at the top of your lungs' rears it's ugly head soon after, and stays.
but surely, after all this mess is cleaned up, we'll see what interesting, complex people they are, right?
not really. Byakuya is every other guy who has called himself 'villain' in this last decade.
hitsugaya's that punk kid with the green day t-shirt who sits next to you in math class.
and so on and so forth.... |
