Colored pencils can vary greatly depending on which brand they are. But basic colored pencil techniques include:

1 - Have a set of at least 24 colors; this will give you at least two different tones of each hue to mix together. You can't really achieve complex hues with just 8 or 12 shades, but at the same time, don't opt for a larger set than you feel comfortable working with.

2 - Put darkest colors down first (for shadowed areas, often near edges), then shade lighter tones on top of them -- colored pencils are transparent media so the darker colors will show through the lighter ones, almost regardless of which brand they are.

3 - Don't be afraid to use your eraser. Colored pencils don't erase completely, but they will erase just enough to allow you to go over the area again with a lighter shade and create highlights.

Prisma pencils are costly, but best for most coloring along with Prisma Markers, I'd recommend Pencils because a good pack them markers costs 179 dollers, and the 8 pack would be about 15...

I use pen alot though, ever tried using a Micron Pen and just making your images black and white? It looks pretty nice though difficult to rid of white spots

I wouldn't even go for watercolor pencils, unless you plan to mix water colors and pencils together. Imagine: If you happen to get even a teeny tiny drop of water or liquid on the drawing, it will activate the paint in the lead and you would probably end up with a really nasty paint smear if you're not careful. I'm telling you this from personal experience. So, I say a big no no, unless you are really up to mixing paint with colored pencil. They are very risky to use, so I wouldn't even recommend those.

Prismacolors are really good, depending on your taste. They have soft lead cores, and can blend very easily. Good for art students. But finding them can be a chore, as they're not really sold in retailers like Wal-Mart (though they have them, they usually come in packs of four), or K-Mart. Office Depot has them, and so do Michael's (an art specialty store). DickBlick.com sells them, too (recommended place to buy Prismacolors). Packs of even 24 can be expensive. But, otherwise they are really good colored pencils to use. Very blendable, especially if you have a Prismacolor Colorless Blender (a colorless pencil that blends colors). Verithin Prismacolors are very handy. They have thin leads in which you can use to do details on drawings.

When in doubt, you can always use Crayola colored pencils. That is what I use for my drawings. Crayolas are easy to sharpen, and they come in hundreds of colors. One set back: they don't blend easily as Prismacolors. But other than that, I really see no difference between the two. Low in price, they are easy to pick up for any aspiring artist's wallet.

I hope that helps you!
