Just create each frame as a separate layer, starting at the bottom and animating upwards.
Next step, familiarize yourself with Plug-Ins > Animation > Playback, this gives you a preview of what your animation will look like.
When you're ready to save your image, you will need to convert your file to an Indexed-color palette, then save as GIF. GIMP will prompt you to either flatten the image or save it as an animation, select the latter. GIMP will also ask you for a framerate (time delay, measured in milliseconds) and a layering mode (combine or replace) for each frame.
You can also specify animation parameters directly by typing in the frame delay and combination mode as part of the layer name, e.g "Frame 1 (200ms) (combine)" -- open any random animated GIF in GIMP and you'll see an example of what it looks like. _________________ Strata here: Nanowrimo - FAC - dA - FA
