If any there was a more delightful band to listen to, I haven't found it yet. At times it is folk, at times it is alternative rock. Perhaps indie? Progressive? No, I can't call it progressive because it so often recesses to the forgotten musical whims of olde, yet regressive is, too, the wrong way to put it, for their music reaches new, unexplored heights with every album. Their lyrics seem nostalgic, though I have never once set foot in nor experienced the settings they describe. It is sad. It is joyful. It beckons the revival of a renaissance that never was. Their music speaks of a yearning, of a circa long since passed and forgotten, and I want to remember as well...

Come one, come all. Speak true of the Decemberists, and speak thusly.

Death Cab is good, but ultimately lacks the essential eloquence of the Decemberists, not to mention the inherent authenticity that their subject matter is approached with. While Death Cab favors lyrics about heartbreak and lost love that teeter dangerously close to the emo line, the Decemberists favor more a ballade/storytelling approach, shrugging off the atypical norms of the popular music culture scene. I suppose you could classify them in the same genre (even though one is inde rock and the other folk), but you could just as well say that Wolfmother sounds like Led Zeppelin and at least one uninformed simpleton would agree with you.
