Nintendo has announced that it will be about 12% thinner than the DS Lite. The new handheld will contain two cameras (a 0.3 megapixel [300,000 pixels, 640 x 480 resolution] camera on the internal hinge pointed towards the user and a 3 megapixel camera on the outside of the shell, larger screens (3.25 inches as opposed to the previous 3 inches), and improved speakers.

The power switch was replaced with a power button, as the original DS had, now located next to the bottom left side of the touch screen. A new SD card slot will be utilized for external storage of pictures and downloaded software and to play AAC audio.

The front slot for Game Boy Advance (GBA) cartridges will be removed, thus removing the unit's backward compatibility and its compatibility with accessories that require the GBA slot. The DSi will have its own internal flash memory and will ship with a built-in web browser.

Photos can be synced to the Wii's Photo Channel. It is possible to download games from an online store, called the DSWare Shop, and store them on the DSi. The applications will either be free, 200, 500, or 800 Nintendo Points. Due to the higher power consumption and slimmer profile the battery life is reduced compared to its predecessor, the DS Lite.

It has been reported that the DSi will utilize region locking, since it will provide internet services tailored for a specific region. In addition, the DSi uses rating-based parental controls, which differ by country.
Discuss.

When I first read about removing GBA support, I thought it was retarded, but I guess since it's getting increasingly difficult to find GBA games in stores, people who wanted to play them would have already gotten them, and therefore, would already have another handheld that plays them.

I thought the original DS / DS lite were fine. This new one seems like it's trying to be a smart phone or something, and what's the camera for? I never understood cellphone cameras either. Pictures are tiny and grainy as hell. If you want to take a picture/video, use a real camera.

I guess the new DS is fine for people who don't have one yet, but I don't see why you'd want to blow money on the new one if you already have one.

Region locking is stupid.

I'm not too interested I already have a DS Lite. No GBA slot really dissapoints me I still like to play GBA games and I might want Guitar Hero DS sometime. It does have some nice features but it's not worth it. Rather wait for a whole new system not a remodel.

Good features except for their not being any backward capability
but they had to give that up sometime.
this is a good sign that someday they will come out with something that will really be cool and useful.

Spoiler: It will be a piece of shit console with updated anti-pirating software so people will have to pay for games, the shitty mediocre camera will come at the cost of backwards compatability, meaning that nintendo has once again sacrafised games for shitty gimmicks.

Ps3 has backwards compatability all the way to Ps1 titles...they didnt have to give up anything concerning backwards compatability.

My opinion:

Speakers: They don't look improved at all. The holes are big enough for allowing dirt, crumbs, and dust to get through.

Power Button: DUMB. People may mistake it for the Start button, or it may accidentally be pressed during gameplay. The switch on the side of the DS Lite is better and out of the way.

Camera: Sure, the camera looked cool to me at first because other than PictoChat the DSi comes with a photo-editing software application. I thought it was really interesting, but then again, I only play my DS Lite for the games. I have a real camera plus a camera/camcorder on my Samsung Hue phone.

Screens: Bigger, and better quality. Thumbs up to that.

Battery Life: Thumbs DOWN

I think the new ones only play PS3 games? I've found that the PS3 that does play PS1-2 games sometimes freezes on them, as explained in a different thread.

That is a bit of an odd spot to put the power button. Is it raised and does brushing past it push it easily? It's not too stupid (as long as it's not very easy to push) since it's on the left side, and you wouldn't be pushing buttons there anyway, so it's hard to mistake it for another button.

I thought most digital cameras also take videos, and that quality would surely be better than what's on your phone. (Though I do like Samsung.)

The look of the speakers doesn't matter much. Actually, I don't think the sound of the speakers matters much either. Nintendo handheld games aren't exactly known for amazing soundtracks. The only ones I can think of are the Castlevania ones, and I'd guess you'd play Big Gay Lawyers with sound on for the sake of OBJECTION and HOLD IT and TAKE THAT.

The SD card is perfect for Emulators...but didnt the lite already have a SD card? Or was that a flash card?

The size and shape of DS games are the same as SD cards. There is a kind of card you can buy that allows you to download roms and play them on your DS. This worked in both the original and the Lite and I believe it was that card's only use. I believe when HR said, "It will be a piece of @^*% console with updated anti-pirating software so people will have to pay for games," he meant this will no longer work.

The new one (based on the description provided in the first post) will use a normal SD card that you can store non-game things on. This is the same type of card that holds your wii memory, is in your digicams, telephones, etc.

As London said, the PS3's latest iteration will NOT play PS1 games. But nonetheless, you'd be using the same drive for that backward compatibility. Creating a GBA/DS combo slot would be a pain.

It's still a stupid remodel. They need a new handheld. Or, gasp, START PUTTING OUT MORE DECENT GAMES.

Maybe, Im shure they could have found a way..i dont think they even needed to mae a "combo" slot...thats only for discs. And Ps3's and the ps2 for the ps1's games use emulators. (which are the system)

By combo, I meant a system wherein you could have a bay for GBA cartridges with a subslot for DS memory sticks (as many multicard readers have done).

The PS2 does not use an emulator to play original Playstation games - it's a built-in hardware function, rather than a software interpreter, as an emulator is, which the PS3 does use.

Sorry for the huuuuuge bump, as I am normally not the one to bump topics, but seeing as the Nintendo DSi recently came out in America, I'd thought I'd bring this topic back.

I am pretty sure I sound dumb when I say this, but I think the new DSi looks kinda cool and I am thinking about getting it in the future.

True, the GBA slot may not exist anymore on the new DS, but personally I don't play my old GBA games anymore. I have my two DS-es (first gen and the DS Lite) to play them on, GBAs (Advance and SP), and also the GameBoy Player for my Nintendo GameCube. So the removal of the GBA slot isn't that big of a deal to me. The only thing I would need it for is probably my Pokemon Pearl (for the Migration feature).

The camera software looks really cool than I first saw a glimpse of it. It reminds me of that old GB "game", the GameBoy Camera.

I probably won't use the audio feature, seeing as I have an iPod. Nor do I think will I use the web browser it comes with.

Any recent thoughts?
