I've recently found a very nice tool that I think will really help us with finding out if our artists are really drawing their own art!
This "tool" is actually a search engine that looks up images that are gathered from all over the web. It doesn't search by using keywords, like google or yahoo. Instead, it takes data from and image provided to the search engine and compares that data to other images.

The search is pretty accurate, and can even find some images that have been pasted into or over other images. Although, I have to say it isn't completely 100% reliable, as with most anything. As long a there is about a 50% match on the image, you can usually find results.

For example, this image search:
http://www.tineye.com/search/9dc62d872ea44a021fd34c8f1b1163c34c4e0ab3
Although a little bland in its matches, you should get the point, I hope. If you aren't convinced try a search on your own image.

I will also work on adding this "tool" to our approval panel in the future, as I believe it may really help. If anyone has a reason why you think I shouldn't please let me know.
I'm suggesting Strata should add this semi-reliable method of comparing/searching images to the stickied thread as well.

The abuse team has been using this site for over a year now. It's very worth making use of.

Ah, I figured you all would have already been using it.
Awesome either way, this just means I'll have more reason to add it into the site! Smile

Another tool that works well is the image boards. If it's a good art, you can make threads with it and get the info on the artist from other people.

That's how I found most of the real artists' name early on.

Yeah, actually. I ruled out image boards being useful completely, due to /b/tardery, but anon will indeed deliver!

Unfortunately I don't have a method to implement that, and it wouldn't be so quick as Tineye.

Each have their own purposes, some obscure images from popular series are good to find with the image boards.

I've actually seen some pics in FAC that I'e seen in Pixiv and Gaia before, being a regular member in other art sites is good too, a lot of art theives aren't original and will steal popular images from the site's front page, that's why they are art thieves.

I remember deleting a certain image rip from FAC because I recognized exactly what it was and who it belonged to. Took a surprising time to actually hunt up the original, but I knew I'd seen it.

I have to wonder why anyone would steal art on the web and upload it as their own...
Are they making some kind of revenue off it or is it just little kids trying to look good?

I go with the 2nd one. Saw a kid doing that at my old school once, stole his friend's art from artclass and said it was his. Even went soo far as to erase the signature from the picture. (I think he put it on otaku.com or something, cant remember.)

And there was a huge blow up at TLKFAA when some kids got WAYYYY too powermad with linearts that were genrously being handed out to help with adoptables and re-colors. Lil 12 yr olds would put up 30 friggin adoptables with the SAME lineart over and over, would just be a different color with a tuft of hair or peice of jewerly added. Twas insane! Luckily the owner of the site Brian got fed up and solved the problem by making a "Coloring cave" for the linearts and disabled the ablity for a user to upload a lineart that wasent their's directly to their gallery. I mean hell some kids would just have a gallery that is soley linearts of other users colored! That made me sick right there. I hate when kids ruin all the damn fun for us. Those linearts came in handy for me when it came to refs of my feline characters. I would color em in MS paint and toss them up in the icon part of the Trading tree when people would ask for refs (I would ALWAYS give credit too) cause some idiots would go "Png refs only!" which annoyed me when I only had jpg scanned and hand drawn refs. Trust me those linearts were faster to do and showed the colors of my felines better then a handdrawn reference.

Also some kid had the nerve to copy a pic of Maz Bourne's. Dang that was nasty when she found out. xD (It was a kid too, 11 I think she was)

I guess considering that this is FAC, I shouldn't even think that the users here know that they can make money from art...

There are multiple reasons/excuses for it, For the most part it's kids trying to look good, some just don't understand the copyright infringement and just want to show something cool and there are a couple who will try to turn some revenue from it.

Ones artwork has to be good before they can make money from it. I shouldn't think more than 3% of the userbase has the ability to create something worth paying for at this moment in time.

Most of these people on this site would not know what Paypal is, that's why I take commissions on deviantArt. Neutral

I really hope the SEO work Denis has been doing drives traffic skywards, and that we get decent artists from it.
It would be nice to finally see nice artwork all over the front page. And to have people of my age around here too...

It's very likely to drive traffic.

No guarantees on the quality of artists it brings.

Speaking of SEO, I had an idea to help push our keywords into our content more. I was thinking we should add the parent category into the alt/title text of images. This way we can guarantee that there will be actual relevant keywords in our textual content, and the change should be too hard to add.

Another Idea was to redo the way the Categories page works, to bring a more visually pleasing aspect to it, as well as provide more "readable" content for search engines, since crawlers can read Java-generated content like the pop-up boxes. This would be something for a later release though.

Categories page definitely needs a rewrite, and it's a fairly high priority project. I'd like it and the new URLs to be the main new improvements in the next version.

Category in alt text probably wouldn't do much. It's already on the picture page.

But this is getting off topic for this thread.
