Also, when viewing recent and popular fanart and fanfiction from the homepage, you should make it so it goes directly into a gallery of recent works instead of having people click on a certain day. (Just consolidate all recent works in a 30-day period and have oldest works disappear off as new ones are added on.) Being directed to a page showing links of recent days is a rather awkward transition. (Modify your advance search to enable users to search by date rather than make a separate page of recent dates.) If you use my gallery mock-up, you could have one page with recent fanart and fanfictions and another page for popular fanart and fanfiction and have the links directed to the corresponding page. (i.e. popular fanart directs to popular fanart tab, recent fanfiction directs to recent fanfiction tab, etc.)[/quote]

This is in effect on one of the child sites. Wile I agree with you on the added convenience the concept was not employed here on FAC due to the sheer volume of incoming works FAC has. This site was bringing in anywhere from 400 to 700 images a day at that time. A thirty day period would overwhelm the system to put it mildly, even a five day gallery would be taxing it a little. Even with the thumbs option set to the max, a thirty day period gallery would have way to many pages to be practical from a browsing stand point, no one is going to sit and go through a dozen gallery pages unless all of the work is top of the line and sadly the bulk of FAC's userbase are beginners. The percentage of experienced users is fairly low to put it mildly.

I do not object to it being reconsidered, but it would need some fine tuning.

Date-based gallery browsing (e.g. type in a specific date) is somewhere (read: mid to back burner) on my personal to-do list for FAC development.

As far as performance goes, due to the way pagination works the amount of processing is roughly propotional to which page you're viewing. It is possible to optimize the processing for some of the later pages (at least when browsing by Newest First) but tricky.

Ah, I see. Thanks for the clarification. Perhaps instead of a 30-day period, have the galleries show the most recent 200 works or so? That would make more sense now that I think about it.

Just curious. Are there any new updates concerning the status of this endeavor?
