First and foremost, are you familiar with Photoshop tools and all? _________________ “Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure...than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” ~Theodore Roosevelt |

You can make your pictures look nice without PS!
Do you have PS? First, draw a picture (lineart) and open it in PS. Then, experiment with many of the dodge,(makes it lighter), burn(makes it darker), brush, effects, gradients...etc.
There are professional PS tutorials on how to color on Youtube like this one!

It looked like he was using paint brush, both airbrush and pen tools at times. Tablet used (ahah obviously). He change the coloration near the end to a more "warm and red" look. ;A; He got her mouth wrong. GUH, but it still looked excellent.
Anyways, speed painting takes both skill of the tablet with lineart and coloration with a bit of knowledge of your wanted program. It does not have to be PS. _________________ “Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure...than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” ~Theodore Roosevelt |

OH. LOL.
Question. What version of PS do you have? If you have no PS, what art program are you using? _________________ “Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure...than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” ~Theodore Roosevelt |

I know this is a little old, so I don't know if you're trying to do this kind of thing anymore. What I'm seeing is a series of techniques that you might want to learn individually, and not limit it to "speed painting," but more of a "take as long as it takes" painting.
I don't know what tools are being used in the video, but here is what I like to use: http://adonihs.deviantart.com/art/My-Brush-Pack-118954791 If you browse the artist's account, you'll gain some idea of how she uses them, but if you don't want that level of detail, I tend to stick to the "standard painting brush" for most of my shading, and it's really all you need until you get into some of the intricate skin textures and hair.
For natural looking shading, try to avoid the dodge and burn tools, and layer on increasingly (but not too drastically) darkening shades of the same color. Don't be afraid to mix other colors into your shading and highlighting, either. Also, the larger the original image is on photoshop, the easier it is to detail, and can be shrunk down later for appropriate viewing size.
I'm sorry I'm long-winded. ^^; But if there's anything you want to know, ask away. I use photoshop elements as well. |
