It was a bill that would give him the power to shut down the (US portion of the) internet in the event of a "cyber emergency" by forcing ISPs to cut off all customers.

Details as it has progressed over the last couple of years:

This was a joke to ban the internet right Obama?

Ban the internet? That would be like wanting to drain the ocean with a sponge. xD

Lots of sites have participated. Google and Wikipedia being the biggest.

Did facebook do anything? They are the other huge one that really needed to join for the protest to truly be useful.

Google's protest is silent but funny. Wikipedia's is a bit more formal, serious ... and ya gotta admit, that's a pretty spiffy way of presenting their outage page.

Hey, here's an article that took screencaps:

Whether he is personally for it or not, it was smart for Obama to say he is against SOPA and PITA. If not, that would almost completely destroy his chances at next office.

Now here is the ground-breaking news for today. The government shuts down MegaUpload on piracy grounds. In retaliation, Anonymous shut down the Department of Justice website and Universal Music website. If they can shut down MegaUpload without SOPA, imagine what will happen if they do find a way to pass it. I am literally on the edge of my seat at this hour.

like my post earlier in the thread shows shutting down websites -- even those outside it's jurisdiction is nothing new.

Perhaps more disturbing is that they arrested the site's founders -- none of which are US citizens not reside in the US. They ordered the police of other countries to arrest and extradite them, and the other countries complied.

They were involved in some attacks against Sony, but it's questionable if they were actually the ones responsible for the big hack.

its almost obvious that they did...they just cant prove it. Either way...the network got super-breached. As I understand it...anonymous picks a target and shuts it down...
