Every time I draw, when it comes to the background I draw a blank. Nothing! Before I begin I have the most amazing ideas for a picture as a whole but as soon as I put pen to paper (or Wacom tablet) slowly my grand ideas dematerialise .

Its frustrating! I decided that when I complete the foreground of a piece to sit and leave it for a few days to see if any at least half interesting environments would come to mind. But nothing.
I God damn Annoy Myself!
I have never completed anything I have drawn due to a brain fart when it comes to a background, so I always end up just making the background some lame color and move on.
I am not sure if this is a question or if I am venting, I have always, always had this trouble and I have slowly lost interest in drawing over the years because I find the end result boring and frustrating!
I guess I need to know what inspires you and drives you to complete your artwork in its entirety.

I completely understand about the frustration. You just want to stop because you are not sure if it is even worth the time (maybe the background will look bad in the end). It is all psychological. See, even now, just talking about it frustrates you.

I tell myself that it will never hurt to not finish this picture immediately. There are artists that complete works (with backgrounds and all) after weeks, and the PICTURE LOOKS GREAT.

Instead of attempting to draw it, getting panicked, and then ending up with a one-color background, KEEP WORKING WITH THAT IDEA. It may not look the same way you pictured in your head (heck, when has anything come out exactly how you planned), but success happens when you KEEP GOING. Sooner or later, you will pull out a result that is much closer to the ideal background, or is at least A background.

I say you take out a random piece of paper right now, take out a pen (JUST A PEN, no eraser, no pencil), and draw A BACKGROUND. If you need a reference from online, go ahead, but do not give up on this picture until it is as detailed as possible. Add all the leaves, windows, shapes, birds, etc, and you will feel like a real artist attempting to get everything out. If you can do something frustrating like this (drawing a full fledged background, something out of your comfort zone), you can certainly incorporate a background in a normal picture.

Good luck!

This is totally understandable. Sometimes, I just walk away from my pictures to do another day until something in my environment inspires me to finish it. For my style, sometimes all I really need to do is draw some circles and lines until I finally figure out what I want out of the background. Next thing I know, it turns into this really incredible piece that I had not even thought of. The key is to just not think too hard or else all other lines of inspiration and encouragement dry out. If you must, throw coffee on it so it makes a cool background (really don't though if it doesn't fit the piece, just trying to give ideas here). I remember one time luckylace here drew me a picture out of lip gloss for me and it turned out into just trees and thorn brambles. Maybe just some shading with different colors like you say you do is a great base, all you need to do now is add in some outline details to go on top!
