This question is prompted by some recent events (but I won't say who exactly if you don't).

Historically, we've not allowed these submissions on FAC period, as all it involves is simply using a tool to arrange pre-defined elements on a figure base; obviously you can use the results of a generator/dollmaker tool on your own time (say, as a visual reference) but submitting a screenshot from to our site is not allowed.

Coincidentally, this rule also predates the addition of the Scraps system to FAC, so I'm wondering if this should change.

We have two options on the table:

Not allow them at all, same policy as before.

Permit them only as Scrap submissions.[/list:u]

Either option has its comparisons. deviantART, for example, officially permits them only as Scrap submissions, while FurAffinity does not permit them at all.

What are your thoughts on the matter?

I'd say alil bit of both...as in dont overload or make your entire gallery a dollmaker gallery. We had a huge problem with this over at TLKFAA when people would just make random adoptables useing ten or fifthteen bases at a time and putting them on the adoption tree. X_x

I say this because I used a few bases here and there (at least five in my entire gallery) because they are very good to use for color and appearence references for those who wish to draw my charas..which were all lions since I'm still not an expert at drawing those guys yet. xP

Note that "bases" and "dollmakers" have subtle differences. Typically, a "base" is offered freely by the artist and the person using it draws the rest by hand (much like an artist offering lineart for other users to color -- said coloring is done by hand). A Dollmaker, on the other hand, virtually all resources ("parts") involved were already created (drawn and colored) by the artist, and the user is merely picking and arranging them.

Also remember our implementation of the Scraps system: They are separated from a user's main gallery, excluded from the various other browsing methods on the site (recent art, category browsing, etc.), and are separately watchable from regular pictures.

I don't want to see a flood of Dollmaker stuff, but I can see potential values. Sometimes, for example, I've used Dollmakers to hammer out ideas before going at them with my other tools, and it might be nice to display original concept drafts in Scraps for comparison with how it looked when I made it myself. *shrugs* I'm ok either way, though.
