Just because the aliens don't use weapons, lasers, and all sorts, or don't communicate doesn't mean they aren't intelligent. People seem to think of them purely like wild animals who run on jsut instinct. They show in all the alien movies that they have intelliegence, and they actually do work together. They track their pray, they use team work, they work good alone even if they want to.
Hey, I never said the Aliens weren't intelligent. Being an avid fan of the movies, I know full well the thinking capacity of our xenomorph friends. Observe:

Alien: The creature in the first movie acted more on instinct than intellect. However, it does show some higher thinking both in the fact that it used the air ducts to move around and avoid detection and that it snuck onto Ripley's escape pod to avoid an untimely death in the ship's explosion.

Aliens: The creatures in this movie showed advanced tactical skills, setting ambushes, testing defenses, and and finding ways around fortifications. The queen even figured out how to use the elevator lift when chasing Ripley. They also portrayed higher communication skills.

Alien 3: This was the most animalistic of all the aliens, both in it's physical form, as well as behavior. Which brings into question: Could the host organism for the egg not only determine the alien's physical nature, but also mental capacity as well? If you noticed, the alien gestated inside a dog. This resulted in a creature that ran on four legs and had a more animal quality to it. The creature acted almost purely by instinct in this movie, showing next to no higher thinking at all.

Alien: Ressurection: Back to aliens gestating inside humans, back to the intelligent, crafty creatures we know and love. In this movie, they showed extremely high levels of thinking and communication. The most notable was their means of escape: trapped in cages, two larger creatures decided to take advantage of the acidic qualities of their blood, killing a weaker alien and splattering it's blood across the cage floor. The blood immediately ate a hole in the floor, and the creatures escaped. This is just one example.

As you can see, the aliens are creatures of higher thinking. Combine their intelligance with their primal instincts and viscious nature, and you have the perfect killing machine.

Do I read way to much into these movies? Probably. ^_^

I've always usually considered Aliens to be like ants. Don't you see the resemblance? There are different classes of ants: workers, gatherers, hunters etc. This is similar to the Aliens, but more notably is their different and diverse species. There are facehuggers, aliens, predaliens... Hell, they've even got a goddamn Alien Queen. Aliens are quite possibly best described as ants. They build thier own colony and work together to achieve whatever is best for the colony (or in the Alien's case, whatever is best for the Queen.) It's just an analogy however, but take note.
Although one thing I DO find odd is why, (considering how long the aliens have been in existance) even with all of their intellegence they've not constructed any weapons of any type. I mean, they have opposible thumbs don't they? The Predators seem to have managed well for themselves, why not the Aliens? I suppose each science fiction with diverse villians must have humans, technological aliens and the "unintelegent, non-advanced hunter aliens." (Think along the lines of Starcraft again - Terran, Zerg and Protoss.)

Again, we are talking about fictional creatures in the contex of a screen play. They need to be interesting. The alien is your typical "scary monster". But what makes the alein really stand out from the crowd, what makes it truely terrifying, is it's ability to think. An animalistic creature that renders flesh from bone with it's bare hands and kills in a particularly gruesome fashion is truely frightening. But give that creature technology (guns, spaceships, what have you) and you lose some of that raw horror. it becomes something you can begin to relate too. And, at that point, it is no longer scary.

As for the hives, hell, it's just a cool idea.

Never said you did say that hun. I was speaking in general.

And very good examples on those alien movies Will. And the whole thing where we begin to relate is very, very true, thats what i'm thinking.
