I was responding to the comment made by Trinity. I forgot to add the ending part, which was that maybe with this new "funart central" the kiddies will migrate over there since they seem to be the ones that like the old style. Might take awhile but its always a possibility. Perhaps nudge it along? |

hopefully, with funart central, everything will even out.
Because a few people said that older, more skilled artists prefer a darker and neutral color scheme, that we would attract more of those types of members. That was never true. All it did was run off a bunch of the kids, which is the problem now; less people frequenting Fanart Central. We did gain a few better artists, but lost a lot more.
Right now, the kiddies may be the only reason FAC is still standing. _________________ "edit : i luv james" - Layzcarter |

But is that what FAC wants/needs? More sheer numbers, or a more reduced number of more TALENTED artists??
I'm guessing the former. :/
I mean, if some of the trouble of holding up FAC is because of the bandwidth... that problem wouldn't have been nearly so severe but for all the little kiddies posting every doodle they come up with, regardless of 3-day limit or no, in the hopes of someone commenting on them.
And it IS starting to turn into a chatting thing. :/
Sorry for getting off-topic; I'll take it somewhere else if this goes on, I suppose. _________________ |

It's no question that FAC wants/needs better artists. And thats what we want. Its the know-how-to-get-them that we are lacking. _________________ "edit : i luv james" - Layzcarter |

Well i agree with Trinity Fire on the nnotification part of it, but you main speed problem is there is to muh for your server to handle you simply need a larger capacity of sort on your servers.
And i my self have started my own decline of visits to FAC as of late. it's not due to site it's self, because i like the color of this one, having previoulsy visited the old one i didn't quite care as much for it as i do this one. and my reasons for ferther decline in my visits are the fact that i am alive and have a life to be living. This place is for my own fun and such. but i've noticed the slower load speeds up untill today, which is abnormal for my connection to this site, and figured you've gotten the site ironed out farely well. With the other sites i've seen i've noticed much more to do but this place feels better suited for me. And even if i could play music or mix it better than what i can now, i believe that this site just can't have music because it would cause the site to be extreamly slower and defeat the purpose of calling this site "Fanart-Central".
Sorry for the long windedness of my reasons, but i like this site and my lack of visits is from my own business in my life that takes time to be taken care of thus keeping me from having my fun. <-- i'll just use this as my s**t eaters grin. |

It seems i'm just be hind Sir Unfocused.
But, the know how to getting the artists is to:
1) Out do the other sites.
2) Post the best of the best on your main page (your all ready doing) and become better know to the world.
3) let us know that your systems can handle great numbers of people.
4) If you can listen to us then we will listen to you. (means you may have to expand the number of mod and admins.)
5) Giving the user his/her best experience is the top most priority.
I'm sure this will help you, but it's not like you don't already know most of it. And adding things like search engines are good ideas as well. so if your up to it try getting part of ask or google to give you all of the links that their bots gather to any site that have to do with art, so you can really call yourselves the biggest collection of art from the newbies to the pros.

Ad views and ad clicks of unskilled artists contribute just as much to paying for the servers as skilled ones.
I mean, if some of the trouble of holding up FAC is because of the bandwidth
Bandwidth was never too serious a problem for fac, hasn't been a problem at all for a long time. Usually its been processing power that is the problem. The last week or so processing power is becoming a problem again so I'll be migrating to a new more powerful set of servers at the end of this month. |

i know you've all ready heard of this little number. But with prosesor power problems, you can only either get mor servers to spred the tast of prosesing, or you could move to the newer Quad core they are the optimum on the maret as of now. but the thing about that is that they cost money. money which you may not have at this point, right? well no fears the other types of prosesors in more servers can help this. all though they take more space, they get the job done. and any how the band width would more that likely be a problem with the site users and their connection. |

FAC is currently running on 2 dual processor servers and a single processor server.
The 2 dual processor ones will be replaced with more powerful ones at the end of the month. |

I am awar of the security and privacy of the site it's self. but i may say that if you have gone for this long with that system then you should also upgrade the single processor to the dual, so as to ensure a pure quality speed and an upgrade that will not be needed in the future when the system is becoming more backed up with tasks. when the upgrades on the system start is the site going to be down for very long? I'm sure you will let all of the users know about the upgrades and the times in which the site will be unavailable. |

The single processor just serves some pictures (Static files don't need much processing power) and email, dns, and some other misc tasks. It will be upgraded when needed and more servers added to the cluster as needed and money available for them. |

Yes the cluter is the problem with allot of places. and since the server only serves pics and such what, ther is no real need to upgrade that, like you said. but back to my question, will the site be down for very long when the upgrades take place? or will i just be a quick shot in and out thing like with the PC's hardware upgrades? |

If all goes well there will be no down time.
Reasonable worst case a few hours in the middle of the night and submissions disabled for a day or so. |

Yeah, speed problems: BIG. It takes way to long to move around the forums, so I just end up losing my patience and heading somewhere else.
Other than that it's school. I don't have time to go on the computer anymore. |

|

Well, like i've said before, the speed problems may or may not be the site. as far as process speeds for the site it's self go, the problem is to much on the site fo the servers to handle, that being the users, bots, and submissions the come and go daily.
But most of the problem is the bandwidth the the user is using to access the site (a.k.a. your conection type and modem speed). i've used this dail-up connection for some time and noticd no speed problems on it except for the fact that i'm pulling in only 41.33Kb per second. and when i used the T1 at the labs i've noticed the speed has dramatically increased but that was because i was pulling in about 450Mb per second. the site speed seems to be a small chip in the bricks right now but it will be fixed some time soon, if i understand denis correctly. |

I've been recently been doing some work to improve the server's speed by increasing the server side caching for non-logged in users. |

Good step to take. it's a wonder i didn't think of it. it should help the problem for a time being, or at least till the processors are switched out and then it will just add to the system. |
