If you are trying to make a new OC, and you are going to draw it for a looooooong time, you want his default clothes to be really cool, dont you?

What is your approach to design the clothes of your carachters? you only slap different clothes on their bodies for every picture or you have a default set of clothes for each? Do you try to give them really detailed clothes or is it just a minor detail on your pictures?

I am going to design some characters and I am looking for what approach to take on their clothes...... anyone?

Clothes are a pretty minor detail to me. =/ What I usually do is first draw something really simple, and then add details as I go along.

But then again, there's no magical method to designing, just do whatever you think looks best. Smile

Well, I first try to think of something that fits their character's profile: what their personality is like, what culture they're a part of, etc.

After I have that in mind, I try to fit something to their personality. Someone with a sarcastic, cynical personality probably isn't going to wear pink and yellow flowy things. (Not saying they can't, but in general...)

Then I just slap together all of my favorite things in outfit designs and hope they come out okay. 8D I have a thing for popped collars, gloves, boots, neck coverings (turtlenecks, scarves, etc.), and button-up shirts, so a lot of my characters have outfits with these things.

Some of my characters have fancy clothes, some don't. I guess for a contrast, see this doodle here. The girl isn't very rich (to her dismay =P), and she travels around a lot. She's also a bit of a sarcasmo and easily pissed off. So I gave here simple, but modest clothing. The guy is from a rich background, and is a warrior, but also a major dork. So I gave him armor-like clothes and (though you can't see it) the shirt sleeve lengths are asymmetrical and his vest and shirt are rather dorky looking, yet still fancy.

So yes, my first step is based on the character themselves, not necessarily what I think looks cool. Though I try to make them look okay, otherwise I can't stand drawing them.

True, it is fun to doll up your characters. Laughing I guess since mine all fit into a series, they have their basic default clothes. SOme of them have multiple outfits, though. Like Gatha (turkeyboy). His clothes are so damn complicated, I could never keep it up in comic-form, especially if he's fighting (unless I make the fighting really static and undynamic, which sucks.) So I gave him a less complicated outfit too.
Default clothes? Why would you need those? XD
Well, If you are going to draw a short comic, a manga, or any other things in wich your character needs to be drawn again and again and again..... Its rather difficult and time-spending to create a different outfit for each carachter in each page or chapter of your "story".

Actually I dont really draw too much OCs and when I draw them I just slap on some random clothes that I think look cool, (but actually don't) but lately I have started thinking more about how the carachters look and their personality and I have even considered trying to make a comic. And for a comic, for some reason I think default clothes are the ones to go with..... or arent they?

Define "clothes"? Since I'm more of a critter artist, clothing is not an issue -- fur and natural decor are the order of my day. For the usual critters I stick to something simple, as you might see on a normal animal creature. Two, maybe three colors pf pelt, no fancy plumes or anything unless the species type calls for it (but even then, conservatively).

But, that's not to say I don't opt for extravagance from time to time... W00t! I've designed some quite extravagant dragons, and I have on occasion designed a set of clothes.

I don't have much experience in the way of actual clothes, but I usually envision a general type or theme of outfit, like "military uniform", "scuba gear", or so on.

Actually... holy dj vu! I feel as if I've given this whole explanation before! Let's see, where was it....

Aha!
> What pieces of clothing do you like to draw?

Two threads, same discussion. Shall I merge them?

He's asking both, really. One is for suggestions, the other is to share our own opinions on the subject.

Since the majority of my original characters are well-toned muscular males my clothing designs for them are.... usually pretty sparse....

Do as you please Strata, although I was trying to aim this towards how you decide wich clothes to use, unlike the other thread that is just asking wich ones you like to draw....

I have many "no-shirt" drawings in my gallery, well not many but two or three Rolling eyes

Yesterday I was designing a default "government outfit" to use on a comic I will be drawing, I am so dumb that after choosing the colors and drawing everything, I noticed that it's just an altered kakashi outfit. Sad
My characters are always fully clothed. I dunno, I'm shy about drawing sparse clothing. Plus it just doesn't look right with my characters ^^; (especially a certain one that has a few *ahem modesty issues)
Same here. ^^; I'm not necessarily a modest person myself (or... I wouldn't be if I didn't have self esteem issues), but I just love designing clothes. It can be a pain, but I always tend to layer more... and more... and more... and they're eventually coated with tons of random clothes. :/ And such Gatha was born, lol.

And yeah, I don't feel lit looks right with my characters either. And this isn't just a "I don't want to be demeaning to women" issue, either. Even my guys have modest clothes. Unless you count Gatha's mancleavage. =P

I like to get some stuff from what people actually wear. Look around you in a public place, you can end up finding some pretty interesting stuff, or stuff that if you changed a bit would look pretty cool for your character.

I usually go with the same basic idea, jeans and a tee-shirt. Then I add my ideas from there, like if I want the pants to look plaid or something I just use the basic jeans look and alter that to be right. I always use a tee shirt.

Hee, sometimes I wish I could just stick my characters in jeans and a tee. Some of their outfits are frustrating. But then I remember the world they live in isn't really a "tee 'n' jeans" kind of world.

Clothes... eghh. I fail at clothes. o.o

For my OCs, I try to fancy them up without really mking them too detailed. I generally do a layer thing, like a dark-ish shirt with low sleeves (like the kind that are on the upper arm, not really on the shoulder... what do you call those?) on top of a lighter wife beater or tank top.

...People also mistake my OCs for girls. *sweatdrop*

Ah well, I thnk it works. I've never actually drawn the bottom half of my OCs when they were wearing clothes, though. (Oh wow, that sounded dirtier then it should have.)

See, when that happens and you didn't want it to, you have to take a step back and think about what you're doing wrong that makes them look that way. D: Just say no to girly males!

I don't see any male OCs in your gallery, so I can't help you, but, uh... if you want me to help, I can. =D

-----> Todd

I know he is very simple design, I just wanted to see how consistantly I could draw the same character... I can't normally draw the same character twice.

Now to say something relevant to the conversation... ehm... yes... clothes are good... everyone should wear them. :3 But nudity is also fun.

Well, aside from the girly pose, I think the biggest cause for confusion is the hips. Guys don't have curvy hips like girls do. You may also want to make the shoulders more broad instead of sloping down like that.

And, though a lot of people seem to draw guys looking anorexic, their lack of any muscle mass whatsoever seems to cause a lot of confusion too. Just a side thought.

It's really all in the anatomy. :3
