Who is ready for this challenge?

Twilight Contest

This has nothing to do with the Twilight Zone, or the upcoming Legend of Zelda game (though I certainly won't prohibit fanart of either, long as you follow the rules).

This is a dual-themed contest. The second goal is to portray some kind of nighttime setting (hence the "Twilight" part).

What's the first goal? You have to do it -- in reverse!

Specifically, I am referring to creating a drawing to be shaded in negative, and inverted on the computer. Please take a moment to read over my tutorial on what this technique is and how it works:
- Part 1 (general overview)
- Part 2 (close-up analysis)
- Part 3 (methods for inversion)

Think you can do this? Of course you can, you just have to apply yourself! :woot:

Now, enter the rules.

Eligibility Criteria
  • This technique can ONLY be performed using traditional media. Thus, NO digital art will be eligible for this contest.

The actual medium you choose does not matter -- dry media (e.g. pencils) or wet media (paint) can both be eligible. However, I cannot recommend choosing ink or markers as a medium due to the fact that a single hue of ink or marker always lays down at full saturation and cannot easily be gradated (like dry media) or mixed (like wet media) to produce varying color tones.

  • I know from my own experience with this technique that it's much easier, much less work to create a nighttime scene in negative than positive. Thus, I do require that you portray some kind of outdoor night scene. Specifically, I need to be able to see the sky somewhere in your drawing, regardless of whether the night is clear, or dark and stormy.

  • I couldn't care less about whether your entry is based on an anime, videogame, book, etc., or if it's an original creation by you. I don't care which characters you depict in your entry or how, but I must require your entry to be appropriate for all ages to view -- ideally G or PG, but PG-13 may be allowed as well, depending on the exact content. No adult material will be allowed.

  • Unless you have tried this technique before and have a picture in your gallery to prove it, you will have to create a new drawing and enter that. Note: As a rule, the winning drawings from my previous "Negative" contest will not be eligible here. (They know who they are.)

  • You must have created your drawing with the negative technique in mind; I won't allow any drawing that you drew and shaded normally and merely inverted just for the fun of it (and, yes, I can tell).
- - - - -

Other Rules and Criteria
  • I am not setting an entry limit. Practice makes perfect -- enter as often as you want!
  • As said before, clean content only -- nothing R or NC17.
  • I only require the inverted drawing in an entry. But you may supply the original, non-inverted version if you so choose.
  • You may not refer specifically to me or this contest in the "Title" field of your submission. Please give it an original title that is independent of this contest.
  • Due date? I realize many of you haven't tried this kind of thing before, so you have until the end of the school year 2006 -- specifically, let's make that June 21st.
Examples of an eligible entry
For example purposes only; these are NOT actually part of this contest.

A due date is better too far than too soon. It gives you all the more time to come up with something Smile

Eligible for both contests? That's quite a challenge, but if you can do it... go for it.

... or, are you saying that you work better under pressure? If that's the case, we can do that, just tell me what your inspiration is and I'll give you 3 days to enter it or else it's non-eligible ^_^

(Just kidding!)

I could enter this contest easy!
Less hard work for me! I just need a good idea and I have tons of time! It'll take some work I guess. But I want to enter, but do tell me, what is the prize? Another pat on the back?

I haven't decided yet. I have to finish up a backlog of request/prizes from previous contests first.

Strata has yet to give up on doing a prize request, but he has yet to finish them in a timely manner, either Laughing

Yeah, fine print, that little smudge of pixels underneath the smiley was actually size=-5 text. It said -- nah, go find out for yourself Laughing

Would a candy bar help? I've gotta sell 240...

And at the rate this picture's going I might end up redoing my pic of the were-deer in regular colors and making a new entry for this....I've learned my lesson not to be lazy and use markers for some parts. I'm gonna try one more thing and scan it and see how it looks. If it doesn't work I'm starting from scratch......Sad

I haven't even started it but since its already february and I am already starting school I will draw it soon, otherwise the exams and homeworks would get most of my time. I may either do it in my peaceful room with some music or do it in school with my math teacher speaking in the background, who knows what will happen.

After much debate with myself..I'm redoing it, sorry, Strata.
If you want to know, here are several reasons why: Ugly Picture Blah

I tried to fix the stuff but it just isn't working, I think I overestimated myself...I'll try something a bit less detailed for the new pic.

Well, what did I say about practice making perfect? ;)

Hm, interesting. The colors are a bit "chalk" though... the cause of which being that you shaded heavily (not darkly, just solidly) on the source pic. If you want darker colors and shadows on the result, you need to shade lighter on the paper (sometimes much lighter).

If you refer back to page 2 of my tutorial, pay attention to how lightly I shaded the fur on paper, and how it came out a mid-dark hue as a result.
