This has caused so many questions from newbies, I wonder if implementing a time-restricted edit feature would make more sense...?

For comparison: deviantART does not allow you to edit or delete comments, and they've already said they're not changing it.

I honestly think the newbs should have an edit button. It's really not fair, because the lack of an edit button causes them to make double posts to add something, and this results in the oldbies bitching at them, as if it's their fault. Neutral

Editing can be easily mis-used or abused. So it's a tough call...

But hey, I figure it's worth a try. A short window of edit opportunity, enough to fix a spelling mistake or add in a lost thought, but not enough to come back later and change it.

I'm not really sure how it could be abused, though... Unless you mean they're arguing with someone and someone proves a point with them and they delete their posts saying "I never said anything about that". But even dumb 10+ posters can do that. :/

They should have an edit button.
See I never noticed I had it and never had to use it till I became an Advanced Member I think.
Or it could have been member.

Recently, Sandbox members have been given a 5-minute edit window after making their posts that they can use if they just remembered something they wish to add or want to spell-check their post. After that, the post remains as it is.

The idea behind the lack of full editing ability for newbies is to get them used to thinking their posts through before they hit the "Submit" button.
