This is a stupid question but how do you know when someone replys to your message when you comment on their artwork?

You don't. You have to check it out for yourself. Unless of course they reply on your profile.

Some users will drop their reply on your FAC profile page, and you'll receive an e-mail notifcation of that.

If they drop the reply on the same picture you commented on, though, you will NOT be informed of that, you'd have to check back on the picture yourself.
