"Certainly," he said, "you would not expect them to go to all that trouble for a mere free female, would you?"

Sharon M. Draper.

Mostly because her books are dramatic.

Forged by Fire
Darkness Before Dawn[/i]
etc.

C.S. Lewis
J.R.R. Tolkien
Madeleine L'Engle
Frances Hodgeson Burnett (for A Little Princess and The Secret Garden)
Isaac Asimov
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (specifically for Holmes)
George MacDonald (especially his fantasies)
Robin McKinley (She's a good storyteller, even if I'm not keen on her apparent no-meta policy.)
Calvin Miller (sort of. His Christian allegories had lovely semi-poetic writing, his attempts at fantasy worldbuilding were incompetent)
Cynthia Voight (for the Dicey books and Building Blocks)
Louis L'Amour (sometimes. I consider his books the literary equivalent of a popcorn flick.)
Gayle Carson Levine (attack of the fantasy chick-lit)

Hm... I sense a pattern.

Lately I've been increasingly getting into Cathrynne Valente and Neil Gaiman - can get quite dark at times but there's a power to his stories, and she has a descriptive skill which feels like poetry and a frequent flash of whimsy. And I like Naomi Novik's His Majesty's Dragon series alright.
