When I say fantasy/sci-fi, I'm talking about the books that come in millions in bookstores. You walk in, check out those shelves, and find a million different fantasy/sci-fi books. So, my question is, have you read any of those books? Do you enjoy them? Which ones have you read? Which ones would you recommend? What's so great about them? Are they worth reading twice? Are they a good inspiration? The inspiration is always a good thing for me. If I read a book and it inspires me, that's a keeper. LOTR!!!

Back to my questions, though. Seriously.

I like LOTR a fair bit. \: I prefered The Hobbit, though. Anyways, I liked the Protector of the Small series and two books call Waiting for the Galactic Bus and The Snake Oil Wars.

Only the movies are overrated. I loved them, but it annoys me how people will say "ZOMG I LOVE TOLKIEN! I'M HIS BIGGEST FAN!!" and I ask them about other books, and either they haven't read any of them and just saw the movie, or only started reading his works after they saw the movie. I've been a Tolkien fan for as long as I can remember (ok so that's a bit of an exxageration)

And with that: Anything by Tolkien, Ursula K. Leguin, or Garth Nix.

I heard about some people who actually saw the LOTR movie. Only, they saw them in the wrong order and eventually thought LOTR was messed up.

I'd like to check out some more fantasy books though. I only have a few of them right now...

I have to many crappy fantasy books. Like Deltora Quest
DELTORA QUEST MUST DIE
But I love Eragon and Eldest. Lord of the Rings is great and so is The Hobbit. Darren Shan is pretty good.
I feel sickened by the movie of Eragon. The characters all dont look anything like they said in the book.

For fantasy, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban wins, as it's my most favourite book of the series. I don't know why... well... I guess it's the humour in the story, the way it's written. There's a lot of good action going on, too.

SPOILER! There's the Divination scenes in there, where they are first introduced to Professor Trelawney and they always made me smile, especially when she pretends to predict Harry's death and Hermione is skeptical about the entire subject of Divination... but Trelawney does have some power of Sight. Oh, and there's the bit where Rong sniggers at her announcments about her all seeing Eye, and such.

For science fiction, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire. Perfect for Star Wars fans, it just draws you in, and takes place after events of Empire Strikes back. Read it more than once, and still like it today.

I read more fantasy that sci-fi, but as long as it is a good book I will read it. The Protector of the Small series is very good and all the Harry Potter books are great no matter what. Christopher Paloni, Tamora Pierce and Cornilia Funke not to mention J.K. Rowling are my favorite fantasy authors:lol:

Lol, Dragonlance. Watch out though. Make sure you read the ones by Weis and Hickman first (starting with Dragons of Autumn Twilight), and then branch out, starting with the older ones; the new ones read like bad roleplays.

If you liked Tolkien (and I do), then you should like Dragonlance, although if you're one of those people that gets picky about fantasy authors using Tolkien as (heavy) inspiration (and I'm not), then I recommend you don't bother.

You absolutely must read Anne McCaffrey. Start with Dragonflight if you're into fantasy (and evil life-eating Thread . . . it's not as silly as it sounds, I promise), To Ride Pegasus for an amazing story about precognition, empaths, telepaths, etc., the Rowan is also about a telepath (chronologically the Rowan comes after the Pegasus trilogy, but you can read it without reading Pegasus first). And I could go on, but start with those.

Now I'm in the mood to go read those books again. Smile

Also Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambly. Clever writing, plus a price who's nearsighted.

Oh! That reminds me! Even if you don't read the Anne McCaffrey books, read this one:

Dealing With Dragons by Patricia C. Wrede. Seriously. Takes every stereotypical fantasy element and makes fun of it. Plus, it's short and easy to read. Go read it. Now. You'll like it, I promise you.

I've been enjoying the Pendragon series as of late.

Damn books are too short for my liking. Grr!

Any sci-fi fan who has yet to read the Dune novels by Frank Herbert really ought to. I'm not so fond of the later ones in the series, but the first three books (Dune, Dune Messiah, and Children of Dune) are some of the best novels I have ever read.

Surprisingly, most of the books by Magic: The Gathering (Wizards of the Coast) have really good storylines. They're complex and really well written in a lot of cases. Also, I recommend the series "A Song of Ice and Fire" by George RR Martin. They're EXCELLENT.

Yeah, Dune was good...I thought LOTR was a bit dry...

My favorite fantasy author is David Eddings...I have twenty (20) of his books...

My favorite Sci-fi author is Orson Scott Card, the guy who wrote Ender's Game...that book was so amazing...
