Are they in the right format? You can use jpeg or gif. that might help.

As long as its within these reasonable limits it should never be too large

in gif, jpeg, or png format
no larger (dimensions) that 600x400 pixels
resolution of 96 dpi (shouldn't need higher than that for web display)
