I thought I would make a topic to bring to light those things and flaws that you critique often, whether they are common mistakes or complicated subtleties(SP?)

Basically, I am asking what flaws do you really feel the need to point out in the hopes of helping the artist grow the most and why you point them out.
Please tell what the flaw is and describe it in layman's terms
Explain why you point it out when you see it
How it happens(if you know)
Some pointers if you have some, broken down for any beginner to understand even if it's a simple flaw[/list:u]

I hope having these things all gathered in one place will grant myself and other artists a sort of Quick reference guide, for lack of a better phrase, to see what flaws they can look for in their work and understand how these flaws happen to help them develop their abilities.

*note*
1. This is not a topic for "such and such always says this, this and that and I don't wanna hear it any more." If I see posts like that I will personally ask a mod for the removal of that post.

2. From what I've seen so far, most of the people who critique work here are respectful, but I do feel the need to say this. Keep it general and do not make a spectacle of another artist, be they members here or elsewhere.
I ask that you do not post "such and such does this, this and that in all his/her work and These are the things I crit..."

3. If you wish to use a demonstration illustration you may do so, but the image Must be made by you. Do not go gallery diving and use someone elses flaw to make a point. It would be no different than making a spectacle of another artist, even if you don't name them.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I feel that my biggest crit has to be erasure lines, those lines that have been erased but can still be seen. It's one of the most common flaws I see. I don't see it very often here but, everyplace I view amateur art I see it in one form or another.

This is a simple and one of the easiest mistakes to make in my opinion. I happens when one or both of two things happen
The artist presses down to hard on the pencil, leaving an indentation of the line
A bad/unsuitable eraser[/list:u]
I point this out because I feel they destroy a good piece of art work by showing something that is not there. I have literally thrown out hundreds of good works because I could not erase one line.

These issues can easily be remedied.

This is probably the most difficult fix.
1. If it turns out that the artist is pressing too hard.

They simply reduce the pressure,
This is easer said than done though.

1a. Relax, you are not going to be harmed if you make a mistake.

1b. Practice making light lines. They don't need to be dark to work you can always use a softer pencil or a pen to make them darker once you have it how you want it.

When I broke my self of this habit what I did was placed my hand firmly on the table, held the pencil by the end where the eraser generally is located and scribbled. I feel this led to my the weight of my hand and forearm on the table as opposed to the pencil as well as helped me hold the pencil with a looser grip. It may not work for everyone, but it worked for me.

2. A bad or unsuitable eraser
This is an easy fix.

Experiment with different erasers, and find what works the best for you.

It's a problem with those jewelly anime eyes that even a lot of a proffessionals do, so people don't watch out for it so much. It really seems to bother animators, particularly my character design prof who passed the pet peeve onto me; If a character is in a 3/4 view the far eye should not touch the edge of the face. It screws with the perspective, makes the eye look too long, and flattens out the face.

Tails. Whenever I'm viewing an anthropomorphic work, one of the subtleties that really gets to me is whether or not the tail 'feels' right. Drawing an anthro tail isn't a matter of attaching a tail just above an otherwise-humanshaped hip and buttocks, adding a tail to that end changes the shape of it.

For example, this piece on dA:

Indeed it is cool. But the tail struck me as being a little too high on the spine, so I left a comment saying what felt off (see here).
