Sorry, guys. I do not have much time to make a reply, but here goes:
damn... but look at those sleeves!! the wrinkles in the clothing and the face is so realistic. The background is very subtle, however maybe the artist wanted that so the focus could be on the main subject of the drawing. hmmm?
you are looking for pictures to be more flawless I take it?
Yes, I look for flawlessness or overall a different atmosphere that is more than just a girl playing the violin (creativity too). Basically, it is a plain picture with nice charcoal skills but still charcoal flaws.
http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures/user/madamlaracroft/831290/Poetry-at-Night
lovely lighting and contrast in this, and the perspective is pretty spot on for the pocket watch. It's a bit iffy I know, but I had to suggest it and see.
Interesting concept; not too much depth though. Simple lines and coloring. Generic sephia monochrome effect. The music notes are cool though.
http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures/user/i77310/831276/Car-Painting-1 I'd consider this one; the lighting and texture really catches the eye, and the perspective is interesting.
I actually just finished featuring one of her other watercolor paintings ("House/ Mill Painting") because it demonstrated her watercolor ability better than the car. However, her car picture does have much depth (a little more smudged, but I did figure out she uses a camera instead of a scanner, so I will put that into account in the future).
Thanks a lot, peeps! I hope you have all been doing well! _________________ “Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checked by failure...than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.” ~Theodore Roosevelt |

It's been almost a year since we've had anything featured. I know for a fact there has been some excellent art posted since then. So I figured maybe if I dug up this thread to make some recommendations, there might be a chance of seeing a change in that status?
http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures/user/Issy/837267/Commission---Llyr-x-Kaiser
more cartoonish style, pleasant pastel tones and nice scenery
http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures/user/chevronlowery/838648/Like-tears-in-rain
Kinda simple background, but very expressive, and quite good shading.

http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures/user/jdimmett/839305/Lady-Amalthea
Two interpretations of animated movie characters, one color and one black-and-white, with a very detailed line-drawing style which reminds me of some older book illustrations I've seen.
http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures/user/Miyagu/840983/Hush
Solid shading, warm & vivid colors, nice details on bird's feathers and woman's jewelry.
http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures/user/madamlaracroft/841680/Hope
black-and-white graphite drawing, nice shading, interesting interpretation of an abstract concept. |

^Seconded.
Dramatic lighting, anatomically realistic, great background detail. It's one of the better things I've seen here in a while. |

I agree, this painting should be featured. |

I suggest this art to be featured, not because it is fine art but because it is great art, not because it lives up to some elitist subjective art teacher standards of quality which is not especially relevant on this sort of site but because it is the epitome of why a site like this is great and fun and good.
this is art made for people on the site about people on the site, includes the theme of the site, and builds community. it is well composed well drawn creative conveyed the message intended brilliantly and just makes a person feel good to look at it ...its fun art.
lets be more realistic about our featuring standards, and at any given time make sure one of the 6 or however many things displayed is less than a month old, and make sure one is something like this, not fine art but great fun art with heart.
thank you for listening, even if you think I'm out of line and tasteless or something.
[I like the spontaneous scribbles of children far better than fine art, think it's more in the spirit of what art should be especially here] and that last line does not refer to work suggested, it's skillfully done, Just not in the fine art genre. |

I support paying more attention to possible art features, and trying to get new material up on a more regular basis - but as sweet and fun as Sushiyama's picture is, I do somewhat agree with, in general, the idea that features should be for things which are particularly impressive samples of hard work and long practice, rather than being open season for anything which touches someone? Friendship and networking between artists is an essential component of art communities, and a good reason to promote and favorite a work. But if we were going to try to expand the standards for what art gets featured, perhaps we should start with "this isn't completely anatomically realistic but it can be fairly argued that was intentional and look, it has a really pretty background" rather than chibis on a transparent background?
No offense intended, just opinion. |

Speaking of suggesting possibilities more often...
http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures/user/Rike/848378/Sulo
The curved edges of the photographed page may be an argument against its being particularly polished, but I respect the color balance very much, and believe it appears to be a realistic portrait of the subject. So it at least seems to me to deserve consideration. |

Another Really Pretty and Detailed Animal Art to consider -
http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures/user/Cyanide/848398/Rawr
(Is "photographed or scanned well" a requirement, or can I suggest Possible Cool Stuff on the basis of quality of Stuff even if it's a little bent in its presentation?) |

@Firiel - To a degree, yes. It may be a wonderful painting or drawing or what have you but, if it's impinged because of a bad photo or scanning job then it kind of defeats and lowers the overall quality of the work.
Here's a few examples of some already featured works that had to be photographed if you what an idea of good/decent enough quality:
http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures/user/i77310/830376/House-Mill-Painting
http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures/user/hotleather/733182/Airbrush-on-red-leather
http://www.fanart-central.net/pictures/user/i77310/829552/Watch-Drawing-3
The picture you suggest to be featured (IMO) seems to be photographed well enough to meet that standard.
---
Btw, just to add onto this small discussion of featuring works... I do a agree that with Firiel on this note:
...the idea that features should be for things which are particularly impressive samples of hard work and long practice...
But, also bare in mind, not all works that have been featured are masterpieces. But, they do demonstrate skill, creativity, and hard work put into them which allowed them to be featured.
I'm gonna put a quote here from another thread that I feel sums up the idea of 'features' rather well:
Should show an overall stellar effort and quality. We don't need new featured pictures every hour, nor does every picture that doesn't completely suck need to be featured. It should be the very best of what we have, and sure, maybe that drastically limits which artists will get to be featured for awhile, but that's all the better. It should be something to strive for and a reward for people who only submit great work instead of every crappy doodle they do. I don't think the Rob thing I have up there now is feature worthy. It's not the best. Just less crappy than what was there at the time.
_________________ THIS SIGNATURE IS CURRENTLY UNAVAILABLE. |

Thanks for the data on the photographing aspect, Morpher.
...I'm not expecting once a day, or once a week. But having suggestions proposed on at least a monthly basis, and having a full set of six from within the year, by the end of the year would be awfully nice? |

What art is about for me, and what makes it good is somewhat different than what it is for you. But that's ok.
I see no reason why Something couldn't be put on the feature new every month, even if nothing from the month is perfect, the best thing this month represents the community better than two year old art from someone who is no longer active in the community. |
