It tells of a ogre and how his lust made him kidnap a fair maiden. he traps her in an ash tree and there she remains. Forgotten she is know hence as Ashley. The tree it is rumored, takes her form.

Though Ashley is a Unisex name it is now mostly given to girls. Boys with the name Ashley are not uncommon. In the United States, the novel and film "Gone with The Wind", which had it's male lead Ashley Wilkes, popularised the use of the name Ashley for boys.
