Check this out:

What does it mean? Does it mean I'm running short on memory? I have a Windows XP, by the way. What should I do? Mad Should I delete some files to get it back to normal again? It's not very slow, but it's not as fast as it used to be; Windows Movie Maker freezes up on me all the time.

Should I use one of these options to fix it?

I'm not an expert. Don't kill me if I'm wrong.

I don't think that the amount of disc space you have affects the speed of your computer. My guess would be that you have some spyware or viruses that are running in the background, slowing your computer down.

Um. I don't think I have a virus. I have AVG Anti-Virus, which will alert me if I have one. That hasn't happened.

I scan for spyware using Ad-Aware 6.0 nearly everytime I get off the Internet, and it only finds cookies.

Confused

Don't worry about that, man. Very Happy

Allow me to disagree.

But that doesn't really pertain to this situation; I don't think the 30% thing has anything to do with space since 7.52 is more than 30% of 19.1. :l

And besides, speed isn't noticiably affected until you get below like 1 gig to 500 mb or something. I know my computer doesn't start killing itself until < 150mb or so... 8O

But I'm not a computer expert either, haha. all I know is stuff from experience. :\

Um, I just got a message a while ago. (Forgot to screen-cap it. ^^; ) on the bottom-right corner of my deskbar where the clock is that said I'm running low on virtual memory.

? ? ? ?

It happened when I was scanning in my art. I was scanning in an awful lot.

It means you're running too many processes and your computer doesn't like that. Close any programs you're not currently using to correct this; you can also go into Task Manager and close some of the "extra" processes yourself in the Processes tab (though I wouldn't close anything that's being run by SYSTEM, lol). You can tell which ones are eating up the most memory in the Mem Usage column.

This might also indicate that you have a lot of spy/adware or your computer.

Um, I just mentioned in an earlier post that I don't have spyware. I scan my computer everytime I get off AOL with Ad-Aware 6.0, and all it finds are tracking cookies. But only about 5 of them. Banghead

Operative word being might.

But ya know, go ahead and whine about something as trivial as that, even though I did offer a solution.

Jesus. Kids these days.

I also go to the Add & Remove Programs section of the Control Panel, and I don't have many programs. I don't think that's running it down....I have no clue what it is. I have to use CTRL + ALT + Delete just to close out Windows Movie Maker.... Sad

Um, I am not whining. I wasn't mad. I did what you said, but it didn't work. Rolling Eyes I happily took your advice, but it didn't work. So thanks anyway.

But you didn't say that in the first place. Rolling Eyes Am I supposed to psychically read your mind? Secretly spy on you through the internet? :l

Run dxdiag and post what comes up [system tab] and how long it took for your computer to bring up the window.

Also, what's up with AOL? :l Is that like an internet provider or something? Or is it a browser? Because it's a really sucky browser.

Also, killing the processes isn't supposed to magically make your computer faster overall. It's a way to stop your computer if it starts lagging - the lag is due to too many programs (as in, too many for your computer to handle) trying to do something
(not idling) all at the same time.

+a program like windows movie maker inherently takes up a lot mem when you work with it
+kill quicktime
+if you really, REALLY think your computer could be faster, just defrag the sucker overnight

Okay. Um, AOL is how I get to the Internet. My provider, yes.

I don't want to go in there deleting essential programs, so I'm gonna trust you.

How do I do that?

11/28/06 EDIT: When I tried to unistall QuickTime, it said that unistalling it can cause some programs to malfunction, so I decided against it. Shocked
just defrag the sucker overnight
I can't. It only takes ten minutes to do that. Confused

And seven gigs is a lot.

30% free has nothing to do with memory... it's refering to storage space. I suggest deleting anything you don't use in addition to running a disk clean up and defragmenting once a week.

30% ain't bad commpared to my 14%... and I have a second hard drive.

XD No, I don't.

As for everything else, would it be pictures I have saved on my computer that's taking up the space?

If they're .bmp, then yes. If you have a gazillion, then yes. If you have gigs and gigs of music, then no. It's the music.

Simply restore your system with system restore. its getting your system to travel "back in time" to a prevous state when it wasnt so overcrowded with stuff.

You can find it in StartMenu > Programs > Accesories > System Tools > System Restore
or if you want to improve PC speed the old fassion way, defragment the Hard Disk Device.

You see, when your hard disk recieves files, the folders you poot them in are just linking you to the files themselfs. Otherwise the files are just thrown all accross the hard disk. if you defragment it, this will clear space and allow the Virtual Memory to work most efficiantly. If you have throuble with that reinstall WINDOWS. lol

Would that erase the programs I have on it now, like openCanvas, AOL, and PhotoShop?

If windows is reinstalled: Yes

If you use system restore:

depends if they were installed before or after the PC got slow and bugged up.

If you use defragmentation: No
