Cartoons? Anime?

What is the difference between cartoons and anime? I mean I know that Gravitation would be considered, "Anime" and Danny Phantom "Cartoon" but I hear Pokemon and Sailor Moon being called "cartoons" [i]and[/i] "anime." What's up?

An anime is japanese, a cartoon is not.

They probably called them cartoons due to their childish nature... In the English versions anyways

BTW, aren't you supposed to be leaving?

Whoops. I keep forgeting that pokemon is anime.
I used to watch it way back before I knew what anime was.
Then I got into DBZ and my anime obssesion was born.
I used to watch sailor moon too. I know I call that anime.

Yes, the Japanese word for cartoon is anime. However, most people would consider it an anime.

Pokemon is not an Anime it is a plague upon this planet that must be destroyed! The anime that is, not the games. I like the games but the show? Too annoying.

Let me correct ya there. The [b]new[/b] episodes must be destroyed! I had no problems with classic Pokemon episodes; the new ones suck. They need to get rid of 'em.

Art styles quite oftenly hint what's anime and what's not.

I miss the old episodes of Pokemon; at least they had some plot. Sad

Pokemon was pretty good until the Orange Islands episodes. Though a few of the movies in the more recent years are pretty decent. Like Raikou Legend of thunder. I've only seen a bit of it but it's kinda good. Follows the GS heros instead of the normal crew

Anime is essentially cartoon from Japan.

However, this is like saying limericks and haiku are both poetry. Yes, they are, but there are differences between the two that make the distinction more than their place of origin.

No, I won't get to naming the differences. I can't put the "feel" of an anime into objective words. Shows like Sailor Moon are anime, Bugs Bunny is cartoons, "totally spies" isn't an anime by virtue of being made in france but is openly influenced by anime.

This topic has been discussed probably 80 million times... anime isn't really a japanese word, hilariously enough - they just cut the borrowed word "animation" - from english, no less - short because words with lots of syllables suck. I guess you could say it's a japanese word now since that's where it "originated" in usage, but...

so in short, cartoon = anime = cartoon = anime
