It says 'null value in column "gallery_excerpt" ' however there are no null values there and it has a default so there should be no new null values.

I've reversed the problem changes for now. I'll look into the issue tonight.

Is it time to mention what new features are ready for 3.1 ?

If anyone's wondering, the error message in question involved the feature for specifying whether to display new or favorite pics on your profile page. (Don't ask why it popped up everywhere, SQL doesn't cope with errors well)
