Well guys, it's that time of year again. Is anyone around here going to take it on??
For those of you that don't know, it's basically a challenge: write 50,000 words in 30 days, which will span the month of November. http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node

Who's up for it? Ever done it before? What's your story; how are you going to go about getting it done??
Sorry if this thread is a little late, but anyone who wants to jump on the bandwagon can. (I did, on November second, haha.)
Anyway. Anybody up for it? : )

Between my 40-hour job and my lacking art schedule, getting through an entire month with 1,000+ words a day!? Impossible....

.
.
.

Let's do it!

Hahaha, seriously, Strata?? Brilliant.
Have you gotten started? Heck, I've only got 600 words at this point because I've been typing up snippets in Java class... I've got SAT IIs tomorrow, but after that, I should be home-free. : ) (To a certain extent...)

It's really not that hard. It doesn't need to be polished; it's just a vomit-draft.

(Also, people like to try for 2k a day, to give them a safety of 5 days.)

I was thinking of writing out my pokéfic, but I think I'll go for the other inspiration that hit me. I have a premise and a character ("Skree"), but the plot is TBA.

Don't worry too much about plot; I think for a lot of authors, it's sometimes easier to add in lots of descriptions. The important point is to beef up your wordcount, so it's novelling of an interesting sort...

Word count, smurf count, what's the difference?

EDIT: One chapter, 1,600 words in a single sitting. Not bad for a first start, I guess. And here I am thinking up names on the fly. I should be uploading this to my FAC and dA galleries....

Yeah, see? It's no biggie. :]

I'm stuck at close to 2k. I'm debating whether I should stick to my close-cut 1,667 words a day like I did last year, or aim for 2k a day for a bit of wriggle room.

First section is up in my FAC and dA galleries. I'm working on it in RTF format (because I likes WordPad). I tried converting it to HTML but Word inserts so damn much CRAP formatting tags into HTML files, it's not worth the trouble. Except that I used CSS for the paragraph formatting, so they don't look quite right on FAC or dA (and in fact, FAC wouldn't even upload the HTML version at all, resulted in an error message. Oh noes.)

But anyway ... after a second sitting, 3,000 words plus chane. Almost a good pace for two days, but also two days behind 'schedule'.

I found myself trying to pick out themed names for characters as well as species today. The first passage had only three names: "Skree" (protagonist), "Wrai", and "Rava"; now there are three more: "Nali", "Surai", and "Kal". Still not much plot to think of, there are several points where I'm stuck and then almost literally throw another character in at random.

As far as word count is concerned though I probably need more description. There's a lot of dialogue at this point.

Ugggh~ I just remembered how many birthdays and other time-consuming events occur in November, haha. It's a little depressing when I write for two hours one day, then find myself STILL 4k behind the next. u_u;
Time to buckle down and write! This draft really is vomit-worthy IMO, but I might edit it up later and post it.
Also, hey, Strata, I'll try to check out your fic sometime when I've got the time for it, hahaha.

I remembered NaNoWriMo about three days ago, which is way too late to start, imo. XD; So like last year, I'm just gonna have to sit out. XD;

Aww, Fayore. D: It's not too late!
I started on the third day too, hahaha. Busy this year. u_u; College, uugh, intimidating.
I think just sitting down for about 3 hours on a good day can have me hammer out 4k, pretty easy. :] Just get in lots of descripts, lol.
(Nano is fun to write, but hellish to edit and read. sigh...)

I hammered out 500, then 1,600 words today for a total of 2100. The odd part is, the second half was much easier writing than the first.

Descriptions and actions are easy; dialogue (and my fic so far has a lot of dialogue) is hard.

Ah, for the first time in NaNo (haha) I'm rather ahead. ...By, what, 1,000 words? Well, it's an achievement for me, haha. I'm trying to hit about 2k a day. I know I'm not going to be able to get on the computer every day like I am now, so I want a little buffer.
I wish I had the time to read more things now, but I don't.
Also, this year's NaNoWriMo is officially made of vomit. I'm hating what I've written already. *sigh* Oh well, I'm already 18k in, so I might as well stick through with it. :/

Good going, Trinity Fire.

Lulz, I've been meaning to try this for a few years now, but I never remember until it's too late.

I always have this problem with writing anything down. I have some OCs and a story, but I keep changing things about them whenever I draw them. I don't want to write a real story, because then it's like whatever I decided on for the story becomes set in stone. 8O

You gotta let us read it when it's all said and done.

I was able to write another 2,000 early in the morning today, which left me enough time in the afternoon to finish a drawing and play a few hours of RPG time. That's the kind of pace I need to hit 50,000 by month's end.

Baww. There goes my buffer. :/ College apps and NaNo don't go too well together. I'm probably going to be writing really terrible things for my essays. Hahaha.

Anyway, London, after NaNo is over, you can go to their front page and sign up your email so they'll give you a warning before the next one starts. : ) I can't seem to forget NaNo; I spend my time worrying how the hell I'll get it done with all my homework, but I usually get by somehow or another. (I just need to stay away from the internet.)

And don't let written words tie down your characters. My story this time around is actually my fourth re-do of an old, old story. That's part of why I hate it so much; it's terribly cliche with boring characters and whatnot... And I'm terrible at finding the motivation to re-write sections of my story. And even if I did, I'm definately not doing it now during NaNo. I do re-read every day over the fresh part I wrote the day before, and I fix up a few sentences, but there's no copy-pasta or mass-deleting of paragraphs. My word count is too precious at this point, lol.
But, anyway, as I was saying. My characters and the story has changed quite some since the initial draft. The one main character anyway had a total character re-vamp, because I was sick of 'im.

Also, I find that witty characters don't help a lot. I had them hold a two-page dialogue. My word count barely fluctuated.
NaNo is also made of fluff. Oh boy.

Currently grasping at straws for the next 1,000 words. The progression so far has a sort of... random quality to it, I ocasionally just throw something into the mix for no reason at all and write out how the characters react to it.

I have something of a plan for what avenue to write next, but I gotta get there first.

Though, once I do get there it'll be an almost guaranteed 3,000.

[EDIT]: Well, I made it to the scene in question. First half, anyway. In 1500 words, the characters got into a fight with a nasty creature, battled, took some scrapes and ultimately won, but they got washed a short ways down a river in the process and three of the characters (including protagonist) are now missing.

Naturally, the story follows them three who got washed all the way downstream.

Really? I find dialogue a really simple matter for me (in fact, I have a tendency to write much more dialogue than real description, I suppose. Thanks a lot, Hemingway). What tends to be difficult for me is the actual planning of events and scenarios. If I just write without any thought involved, it either turns out to have somewhat poor continuity, or just a lot of rambling about mundane things. That irks me when I read it, so... I try to plan stuff out but that just takes too long because I don't know how I want things to proceed. XD;

I'm afraid NaNo oozes from every corner of what I'm writing. I'm terrible at dialogue in general, but hey, if you've got a talent for it, lucky you. : )
But anyway, I've been cramming in a few more descripts than usual, just to get my wordcount up. :/ That's another reason I really don't want people reading it this time, hahaha.
But hell, I like writing without much forethought. Planning makes me choppy and cuts up my writing; just letting it flow for me is often more useful. I don't know what I write half the time, but I don't really hate the results. I do plan out things somewhat, but I tend to get overly-descriptive in the actual writing process, and completely kill the original intention. :[
I'm currently trying to learn how to write shorter pieces, haha. (Outside of NaNo)
