It has become increasingly overwhelming the amount of pictures and images uploaded to the FAC Forum over the past 6 or so months. It is not at a point where we had to add a note to the browse button [i]*Just because you CAN upload a picture, doesn't mean you should*[/i] and so far it doesn't seem to do all that much.

It is common sense that you can upload some things for good fun and conversation such as with the Photo's thread in the general discussion, or The Guide to FAC in the unmoderated where it is reasonable and with good reason behind it. Otherwise, random images and pictures just tend to take up to much space, time and get annoying to be frank about it.

From now i think the FAC moderators may have to look into monitoring this some if things don't start to tone done.

Feel free to upload a picture of yourself in the photo thread. But please don't upload every chance you get just because you can. It creates more problems than needed. And i personally am sick of having go through pointless post jsut because plastered a smiley face and then a picture of a traffic sign or something about being pwned.

Please be aware that it can be troublesome and annoying after awhile, and that it's not always wanted.

Thank you.

Yeah. . . . . It's times like these where I just want to throw the little smiley in my sig at them.

My gripe about attachments has never been the feature itself, but the people (usually newbies) who abuse it. IMHO, there are waay too many attachments being used in the Requests/Commissions and Contests subforums. Some members upload a picture because they're either too stupid or too lazy (I place my bets on the latter) to go look it up online and provide [i]a link[/i] to said picture. Sometimes a member will upload a picture the same size as (but often larger -- MUCH larger than) one they'd submit to their FAC gallery.

For these subforums especially, I don't have a problem with people uploading small-sized versions of pictures they're still working on. Or entering the attachment into a contest because the FAC version's still waiting approval. But in the latter case especially, will those people [i]please[/i] remove the attachment once the drawing has made it through approval?

Links to an image are [i]almost always[/i] better than attachments! They require less server HD space [i]and[/i] less bandwidth (read: much easier on the 56k users), with the added benefit that they simply don't take up as much visual space or distract from the thread [i]itself[/i].

My point exactly.

It's getting out of hand and is starting to annoy the moderators. I know it annoys fallen greatly and myself. And it makes it harder to look after the place. And it takes up way to much space than needed.

We don't mind when it's all in good fun and reasonable enough. But sensless uploading just tends to piss people off.

Even our elder members are complaining.

On a side note, i wish i could find that little smiley of yours just a little bigger, about the size of the smiley box in the reply screen, but not as long (equal in lenght and width, not super long) I'd love to have that sort of thing in my sig or as an avatar perhaps. Rolling eyes

Screw the forum elders, lets just do it.

Anyone have any suggestions on minium of posts needed? Smile If it were me to decide i'd say 1,000 posts, lol. But you'll probably say that's harsh. And there are some people like VRJay who would be affected by it sadly when they do nothing wrong and are well known and active all around.

Anyone, feel free to jump in with suggestions on numbers i say.

I don't remember where I even found that smiley but it was an instant classic for me. I attached it to a thread a long time ago and linked it in my sig so I don't have to go looking for it should I need to use it. I assume all it needs to be consistent with the other smileys shown here, would be some resizing and fuzzing? Hmm... I need something to break in GIMP with, and I have a copy of it on my HD, so... hmmm....

But anyway, if attachments should be a post-count privilege, my vote goes for at least 100 posts.

I feel a little out of place here, for posting many, many pictures in spam (although I've started to cut down on it), but if you give a certain amount of post people should have before they can upload pictures, you run the risk of people posting dumb stuff just to increase their post number. In other words: spam outside spam. So you need to ask yourself if that's worth it.
I think a limit of 100kb should be better actually, because most jpg's over a 100kb are too huge to be seen properly in a forumthread anyway. It would force people to use smaller pictures or linked images.

I agree with Lexar. 300kb is too spacious for attachments, 100kb will do fine. Actually, on second though, let's lower it slightly, like 80~90kb, maybe 96kb? Still plenty of room for most JPEG's under the sun and GIF's too, but I'm thinking it should be a more discrete, precise number than a nice even figure like 100kb....

Then we just pity the poor fools who can't resize images under that limit... <_< Rolling eyes ^_^

PS: Is it possible to assign a dimensions limit for images? Something like maybe no larger than 640x480, regardless of filesize?

We're talking mostly about the attachment feature.

Any image linked with an IMG tag will be loaded simultaneously with the thread, which requires additional bandwidth.

Images uploaded as attachments not only require bandwidth for display whenever anybody views the thread, but they also require disk space on the FAC server for storage.

Images provided as linked URL's require no storage space on the FAC server beyond the 50 or so bytes needed to create the link, and since the image isn't actually shown on the page, they only require bandwidth whenever a user clicks the URL to see the image.

Well if i see people who are continuiously uploading imagesthrough attachments or IMG for pointless and idiot, random reasons other than in spam, i'll jsut start suspending them.

Maybe that will get the point through? I don't give a damn, let them bitch and moan. It's common curt...however you spell that word. Uneasy
