This is for the main site.

Everyone usually gets annoyed when they put up a beautiful, well-drawn picture, and some n00b comes by and leaves a comment like:

"cool", "wow favs", "so cute!!!11", "kawaii!!"

They are annoying. Not for just me, but for others on the site.

I have a few suggestions for this:

1) Have a text minimum limit. You can't comment on a picture that is less than a certain amount of words/characters. Some people will attempt to get by this by simply typing one hundred "favs" or 100 exclamation marks. I think having a minimum limit would be an okay idea to enforce, but should not let users post with repeated words, or symbols.

2) When submitting a picture/story, have options like, "Receive General Comments", "Critique Only", or "No Comments". I think that this would be a good feature. Many art sites have it.

3) I think you should require users to post a comment BEFORE adding the story/picture to their faves. Many people get aggravated when someone just faves their picture without commenting.

4) A feature that would be really nice to have is being able to mark comments as spam, or hide them.

Any thoughts?

1. No. Too annoying. Longer does not necessarily mean better. "His ears are too high," and "OMGILOVEIT! So cute. +fave ^_^;;" are approximately the same length. If I had to type a certain number of characters just to leave a short critique, I wouldn't do it at all.

2. No comments feature sounds good. I think it'd be better if the other option was to encourage critique, not require it.

3. I still don't see why people find this irritating.

4. There's already a delete comment option.

[quote="London"]3. I still don't see why people find this irritating.[/quote]

It is irritating because when someone just drops by my picture, randomly faves it without comment, I want to know exactly WHY they faved it.

When that happens, I think:

"Did they like the coloring/shading? Did they like my rendition of the character? Was the background well drawn? Was it cute or funny? Did they fave it just because they like character? Did they think the anatomy was well done? Etc."

Me, my friends, and some people I have seen finds this really irritating. I have been talking about this with my other friends, and they agree with me too. That you should be required to post a comment before being allowed to fave the picture.

We still think Number One sounds like a good idea though.

#1 still would not work. Any sort of length counter would have to ignore bbCode tags (a single IMG tag weighs upwards of 30 chars) and judge by the [i]visible[/i] output, and that can't be done on the client-side where it would be most effective.

If a given user is truly a problem with short comments, consider blocking them.

1.Minimum limit is not the best idea. It will promote random spamming.
Just ignore people who make stupid short comments.

3. That is a terrible idea, the worst idea ever in fact. Seriously, people need to get off their high horses, a favorite is a bigger compliment than a comment. If someone gives you one you should be thankful. Maybe they don't have something to say or don't have time to say it. Maybe what they want to say has already been said so they see no reason in stating it again. Doing this would only promote spam comments.

4. That would be nice as long as people don't abuse it, but it doesn't make sense they would. It seems to work on DA. I think that spam and hiding would be two seperate options. Spam would be reported, "hide" would hide the comment from users other than yourself.

Delete already hides. Admins can still use them for abuse tracking.

Profiles already have the feature to turn off comments. The system would work the same for the pictures, we just need a flag range, and a time to add it to the database for testing.

Beta feature. Comments are still displayed but no one else can comment on your profile till you turn it on.

Oh. Which reminds me, I did put some work into the same option for pictures, but that hasn't even made it to beta yet.

I've got a new idea. How about receiving, (borrowed from MySpace) e-mail notifications like,

"john_doe1234 is wanting to post a comment on your picture, "Peaceful Valley".

'The coloring is just wonderful. The shading is very good, and I like your style. Keep up the good work!'

OR, as for profiles,

"jane_doe1234 is wanting to post a comment on your profile.

'I like your style. It is very colorful and cute. Do you do requests? Keep up the good work!'

To approve this coment, click here. To reject this comment, click here"

And in your profile, you can specify if you want to receive notifications like that. Some users, including me, are tired of receiving two word comments like, "thats so kute. *favs*". I think this is a really great idea that should be implemented, it could prevent chain-mail from being posted in comments on your pictures or profile.

What do you guys think? ^_^

From the standpoint of whether or not a comment appears on their page, a comments-approval type system doesn't differ much from being able to remove unwanted comments.

I don't know just how much work that would be.
I also don't think that many others will like it.

So we would also have to make sure that people can turn that function on and off.

Yeah I know, you could specify in edit profile the default way of receiving comments, or get notifications.

i have an idea.

how bout you have notification box for when you get a picture comment or when someone replys to your comments on there profile or anything like that?

alot of people reply on comments on there page and the only way you can check is through email.

but the msgs can get annoying and fill up your inbox

I dont mind short comments, I think its nice people would even take the time out to comment at all =)

But I could see how it would be frustrating to people that want critique.

As someone said before (I think), have a "critique only" request in maybe the description itself or as an option on the the actual submission page would be good.

Disabling comments for submissions was implemented recently. A "want critiques" option like dA has was also planned, but not finished yet.
