Imagine or draw a light source.
Put shadows where the light would not hit.

You could do a search at deviantArt for shading tutorials. You'll be surprised at what you can find. |

It's kind of about imagining things and seeing them as shapes, instead of what they are. The latter makes things seem far more overwhelming. Also, try drawing in shades instead of lines.
Grab a ball, and put it under a light source. Look at how it's location compared to the light source affects the shadows. Really focus on the shadows, and try to draw it when the light is coming from several different places. Look at other drawings or photos, and try to guess where the light is coming from and why it looks the way it does. Basically, the farther away the object is from the light, the darker it is.
Personally, I don't like tutorials too much. I used to be pretty reliant on them, and really didn't know how to draw my own way. If you're looking off tutorials, I suggest to get some helpful tips from them, but remember that the way the tutorial does it isn't the only way to do something |
