I need a program capable of creating and editing .GFX files.

Photoshop CS3 can't do it, illustrator 10 can't do it, nothing I have can do it. What do I need for this.

Have you tried GIMP? I don't know much about GIMP but it is worth a try.

Do you know what program made them? I'm seeing over half a dozen interpretations of what a GFX file could be, which isn't helping.

E.g: http://filext.com/file-extension/GFX

Descriptions include:

"Cue Club Image File"

"Genigraphics Graphics Link Presentation"

"Instant Artist image"

"PrintArtist"

"RSView Machine Edition Graphics Display"

"The Games Factory Extension"

"WarCraft II Image File"
[/list:u]

First one on that list there ("Cue Club Image File") is exactly what I am working on, knowing exactly what program made them I do not.

Below is a screencap from the game

The base I can manipulate as is, however I need to maintain the original table color because the GFX files (from what I see) hold the information to the space right infront of the pockets as well as the siderails, foul line, balls and bumpers.

Try changing the file name into jpeg, gif, tiff and opening it regularly.
Try changing the file name into jpeg, gif, tiff and opening it regularly.
I tried that, it fails misreably, Photoshop still can not open it. There are two image files for every table one GFX file and one PC paint file (PCX I think)

So far what I can do is open the PC paint images and alter them, however I am required to maintain the original color and also maintain the PC paint image file for the background it self. If I change the PC paint file to Jpeg of GIF it does not work either. That is how I made the abenobashi table. I merely put the image on one of the white tables. I will do an edit with a altered base color so you can see what I mean on that element.

Older games tend to use 256 color modes and fixed color palettes, which makes PCX a convenient image format using indexed colors.

Well Ok, here is an explination of the process and the problem encountered.

1024x768 full sized copy of the image.

Ok, we start out by getting into the files folder
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v371/battousaiofnphiles/Screencaps%20II/Picture001.jpg

Here we have both the GFX files as well as the PCX files. I singled out Baize #8 because that is the one I am going to use for this demonsration.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v371/battousaiofnphiles/Screencaps%20II/Picture002.jpg

I open the PCX file in MS photodraw, Below is the default table design.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v371/battousaiofnphiles/Screencaps%20II/Picture003.jpg

I hit save and this is how the table I have appears in the game
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v371/battousaiofnphiles/Screencaps%20II/Picture004.jpg

...that's boring, I want something different. So in MS photodraw I begin playing with the baize.

Me being a huge Dale Earnhardt fan lets put the styelized #3 in the middle of the table and eliminate that dorkey star.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v371/battousaiofnphiles/Screencaps%20II/Picture007.jpg

I hit save and this is how the table I have appears in the game
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v371/battousaiofnphiles/Screencaps%20II/Picture009.jpg

That's cool I like it but lets play with the possibilities, select random image from collection
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v371/battousaiofnphiles/Screencaps%20II/Picture005.jpg

I hit save and this is how the table I have appears in the game
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v371/battousaiofnphiles/Screencaps%20II/Picture006.jpg

^^^Shit, I just got owned, this is what I am referring to about the space in front of the pockets and being required to maintain the original color.

So I figure I'll try editing the GFX file and I get error messages. I even tried changing it to Jpeg and still I get error messages form all three editing programs Illustrator, MS photodraw and Photoshop CS3 (I don't feel like screencaping it right now but)

Anywho now you can see restrictions I am talking about.

I wonder, can you send me a copy of a GFX file? I'm guessing the GFX file is essentially a 'package' type format containing several individual images, each one in a standard foramt.

In which case means that, ideally, you're not supposed to modify it.

Understand that I can't guarantee anything, cracking a file format is a difficult task not for the casual at heart.

Oh that's fine, I know there has got to be something out there that I can find to monkey with it with, it's just a question as to what.

Still, it's apparently a game specific file format and not intended for modding by the end user, so the only 'official' programs you can expect to find are what the devteam themselves used to create the game's resources with, in which case they probably aren't going to release it.

Speaking of which, for a 1.5MB there are no obvious clues as to what is image data and what is not. I'm of no help here -- not a surprise either.
