I have been reading around and noticed a couple crazy iPad users are defending Steve Jobs' (Apples CEO) dissaproval of flash on the idevice.
And these people aren't just defending his dissaproval, they are lashing out at Adobe Flash and want it dead and gone from the internet all together. Some of their reasons are that it is unsafe and useless.
In my opinion, these people are being unfair and insulting. First of all, Youtube uses flash video, yet all three touch idevices come pre-loaded with a Youtube app that allows these videos to play (not as flash) on an Iphone/ipod/ipad, while Mobile Safari (the idevices internet browser app) will not play these same videos because they are flash.
Second of all, there are a lot of people out there that have spent time, money and effort to learn flash for business, their websites, games, interactivity and presentations. Sure, there are ways to do all that without flash, but since it is such an easy and fun tool to learn even for people with little knowledge of programming, we shouldn't have it taken away.
I know flash isn't going anywhere, but the thought of some idiots out there thinking that it should, is insulting. And it pisses me off that they can so easily dismiss such a large part of the internet just because they are stupid enough to allow flash to be a danger to their systems.
Just to be clear, Steve Jobs doesn't want flash gone, he just doesn't want it on his idevices. It's a few of his crazy fans that hate flash, and didn't speak up about it until Mr. Jobs made his nasty remarks about his dissaproval of flash.
What do you guys think of this? Should Adobe Flash be left for dead, leaving so many developers, enthusiasts and casual surfers out there looking for another easy-to-use/learn interactive toy? _________________ "edit : i luv james" - Layzcarter |

HTML5's video support makes flash for video obsolete. And the CSS, HTML, and JavaScript we've had for several years is perfectly capable of replacing flash for navigation, etc.
Changes to technology should be done on the basis of the quality of the technology. People wasting time and money learning and old technology is not relevant. They can learn the replacement technologies, or become unemployed, same as any other technology related job.
Flash will mostly die in time. Flash sucks for mobile devices because it's resource heavy so many mobile devices don't support it (Including popular ones like Apple's). Mobile devices as a major source of internet browsing are quickly increasing. Therefore webmasters must make their sites work without flash for that important market. Why would they bother making a flash version too?
Also, search engines don't work well indexing flash. It's bad for SEO and therefore generally frowned upon by any web developers who know what they are doing for anything more than trivial effects.
It will stick around in a limited form -- the form it was designed for, web games and animations (newgrounds, homestarrunner, etc), but will die for web user interface.
This doesn't have to kill Adobe, they are perfectly capable of making tools to do the same thing in HTML5 and JavaScript. It might kill them if they are stupid and stubborn about it and unable to accept change, but it doesn't have to.
In conclusion, Steve Jobs knows a little more on the subject than you do. Read Moar. _________________ You will obey or molten silver will be poured into your ears. |

I don't mind the lack of flash support on Apples idevices, and sales prove that most people feel the same way. But Googles "ipad killer" will run the Android OS. And full flash 10. So, if Googles tablet is powerful, much of the flash issues will be gone in the mobile device.
As for the resource, stability and performance issues in Flash on mobile devices right now, well, many of those Apple apps aren't exactly flawless themselves.
I know there are practical replacemets for some of the things flash can do. But there isn't enough to just make everyone forget about it and let it die. Despite some peoples wishes. _________________ "edit : i luv james" - Layzcarter |

What it comes down to it for me is the fact that it's unnessasary in so many ways. i want to mirror everything our lovely webmaster has already told us. i would like to add to that by saying that flash is simply NOT designed for touch interaction. often it requires mouse over events and the like for Navigation in sites to function properly, and games on a touchscreen would really suck. technologies like flash are still for the desktop and the laptop. and as for your comments about Mobile Safari not loading youtube videos? it does. not in flash, but in h.264. hardware acellerated, and good for the battery. if my iPad was running flash to do all that, it would never give me my 10 hour battery. i, personally, DO NOT NEED FLASH ANIMATIONS. i can see them ALL on youtube. and the biggest pet peeve about flash on mobile? You'd load EVERY SINGLE FLASH AD. taking up resources and eating battery, just so you might not ignore some ad for patron.
edit: You said "as well as many of those apple apps"
These are made by Third party developers. unless you are talking about the built in apps, but i don't think you are. those are the most stable, rock solid pieces of software i've ever seen on a mobile device. with a constant UI and ease of use unrivaled by any other platform.
third party apps that don't work are the fault of the developer who made them. NOT apple's fault. _________________ You can fail if it has an apple logo. |

I agree with everything that has been said by all but one.
But the real question is...who?

Hey....this finally came true. According to CNN, Steve Jobs killed Adobe Flash.
Don't believe me? Read this: http://www.cnn.com/2011/11/09/tech/mobile/flash-steve-jobs/index.html?hpt=hp_t3
And don't ever doubt me again. |

Whether its resource heavy or not isn't the argument though, I'm sure moreso what people are concerned and interested in is just the backwards compatable idea. Its like if a company tried not making their software compatible with HTML because of how much better Php is. _________________ |

Resource heavy is a serious problem on phones/tables (and to a lesser extent laptops) because it drains batteries faster.

That statement makes no sense. PHP generates HTML code. _________________ You will obey or molten silver will be poured into your ears. |
