This site really needs a message notification system because not everyone is gonna check their email to see if anyone left comments on their artwork, or if someone they watch added new art. Also, it would be great to know when someone submitted a new blog entry, and maybe to allow comments on the blog too.

Also, one more thing, please (whomever is in charge) get some more gallery mods because I submitted some art 4 days ago and am still waiting for it to be approved.

An automated notification system has been a known issue for a long time.

Currently the matter is simply # of active staff, since the site is really slow these days. (Sometimes I feel like the only staff member left, and that is not a happy feeling.)

It's understandable. I know it would be a lot of work to put in place, and also some work to make sure there isn't any bugs (especially if there is very few staff members working on it). I'm just hoping someday it will be something this site will have because it would be better than checking my email.

On of the known handicaps about an onsite messaging system (aka a "comes with the territory") is the sheer number of notifications that an active site will generate. Thea actual database table for it has to be kept as lean as possible with only the absolutely essential data needed for each notice.

I've been thinking that perhaps the best way to implement it is that notifications are generated in real time for 'active' user logins only; since these notifications effectively don't exist outside a user login, many of them can actually be generated upon login and (if done properly) there will be no visible difference to the end user.

I'm also thinking there should be a statutory limit on how long a notification can remain in the system, e.g. 30 days. One of the user's responsibilities is to review and dismiss their notifications regularly so they don't pile up.

I feel like this site uses outdated architecture. I mean, you have to log in twice if you want to use the forums. That's something I've complained about for years. Rolling Eyes

Creating a shared login is ... difficult. I actually had an alpha version of that working at one point, but it wasn't reliable. Unreliable is worse than not having it at all.

Automated notifications, realtime messaging systems and shared login have all been discussed on a number of occasions. Unfortunately as Strata pointed out are a daunting potentially unrealizable task given the number of staff. While I am still here it is not with the frequency I used to, between the baby and getting my business up and running I have a lot on my plate and can't check every day. Even then I was never a DEV, I simply don't have any experience or know how. That said I am little help in that department.

We haven't forgotten about it, or written it off, we just have not figured out how to make it happen without completely rebuilding the site from the ground up and loosing everything.

Wouldn't you just back everything up if you had to rebuild the site?
