That happened.

They're allowing you to login and download your data for some time if you want to save it. Here's the link: http://www.storm-artists.net/

So goes another small community art site... The time I was apart of their community was short as I joined back sometime in 2014. But I enjoyed my time there nonetheless.

I enjoyed my (quite brief) time there, as well - and I found their forum activity heartwarming. I wish I'd known a little ahead of time, so I could've made sure I had some form of contact for people I was starting to talk to there. And I wish I knew how, besides submitting stuff and commenting on stuff, I could participate better here to help make sure we don't go that direction. Sad

It would've been nice to know ahead of time for sure that they were closing for people to acquire contact info.

And I understand the feeling, I too don't wish to see FAC head in this direction as well. We can be active and commenting on pictures, in the forums and etc. However that in it of itself may not be enough. I feel we'll have to also put in effort for FAC outside of the main site as well. Such as telling people about it, how nice of a community we are and such and advertising that it's a great art site to join. And by doing this if we manage to succeed in bringing some people over here it is then that our commenting on all manner of things will be relevant for showing activity should also spur activity. After all, no one's gonna wanna join and hang around an inactive site.

@Falconlobo - Yes they did. If you click on the link I provided that allows those who were on there to login and get there data there is also some text as to why they closed but, I'll copy and paste it here for you:
We're closing storm down

Why?
Because it is no longer reasonable towards our users to keep storm running in it's current state. It is insecure, the codebase is not maintainable, and most of the core staff has moved on.
We created this tool to download your data,it will remain available for some time.

JSON files are just text files, you can open them with notepad. Click my name below to send me a message if there's anything else you need.

We're sad to have to take this step. We had a great time. Thanks for all your support over the years.

We might return someday, in some form, who knows, but right now, we have to take everything offline.

were you able to actually get anything from that download your data link? I was not.

I was on Storm for many years so I lost a lot when it went down, and I had not backed things up, though I knew the shut down would come eventually because they had told me we would be given a few months notice to recover everything we wanted to save.

which would be mainly contact information of people we wanted to keep up with and such. but I've also lost a lot of art and personal history.

and art jam Sad

@Jadis - I don't really have a need to download as all of the stuff on Storm as it is all on here (as this is my main art site.) Are you having trouble downloading your stuff? I did a few quick download tests to check and I am able to acquire my art submissions, my journals, (don't know for notes as I don't have any to download). But, I am unable to download: Submission info, Polls, and comments/forum posts, shouts and the Watchlist.

I should email AVO to see if they can fix that issue.

yeah I couldn't get anything at all to download in a usable form, and I did email Avo but no reply so far. I really don't expect to be able to salvage anything. it's just gone. I'm sad but I can live with it. life goes on. I make more art all the time anyhow.

and most those people I'll find again in due time someplace.

*edit: I did finally get my art images, not with titles or comments or anything associated, just picture files. the text is separate from the images in a different file and in a barely readable form[code-ish]

That's strange that your unable to get anything... could you tell what you mean by unusable form? Like are you unable to open your downloaded files properly? I know for stuff like the journals you need to open it in Notepad.

What exactly was SAN like? I've heard the name before and probably checked it out once, but that is all.

Storm was a very small very community oriented art site. it was a .net and had no ads it was funded by donations. there was an interesting variety of people there and people mostly got along. or left peacefully. people often left and returned. we did community projects like Art Jam and gift exchange things and such. at the end there were only maybe 10 or so highly active members and at any given time 0-5 people online. it attracted a lot of good people but people didn't stay long term because it was not so active so people would get bored of it.

this site reminds me of storm but for this being focused on fan art and not providing for as much community participation.

An old FAC friend who left here invited me to that site. I uploaded a bunch of stuff until some mod started claiming I copied official art. When I proved to them I didn't, they changed their claim and said I traced all my original art.

There was one dude on HF that claimed something similar. Can't say I'm sad that site closed down with asshats like that running around with authority.

yeah they were weirdly paranoid about tracing just like this place is weirdly opposed to lined paper...lol. ... there was a great community there. since I almost never draw anything close to a reference I never had trouble with those rules, but I did harass them about it now and then by using tracing as a part of the creative process and pointing it out that my traced work looked less like a clone than other peoples original work.

I have great respect for the skill of being able to copy or even trace well, so I think those rules are silly, just the artist should always describe how an image is made and give links to the references used, so everyone gets full credit for their part in the collaboration.

all art is collaborative.

I'm sincerely sorry you had a bid experience with Storm.

I think that it's important to protect an artist's original work; if someone directly traces a picture, then it's not right to post it without crediting the artist. Even if you just do a freehand copy of someone else's work, it's still pretty shady to claim it as your own original idea. It's all about giving proper credit where credit is due. I don't personally care if someone wants to reproduce something that I drew, but I guarantee I'm going to get mad if they don't say where they got the original picture.

It really does suck, though, that unfocused was accused of copying and tracing with no grounds to it. That's almost as bad as art theft, in my opinion.

Also, this place his no vendetta against lined paper, Jadis; I directly read Stratadrake telling you that it didn't matter, the rule was outdated, and you can post drawings on lined paper. The only one who said anything about it was ME, and all I did was point out that it was listed in the rules.

Definitely unjust accusations for unfocused. I haven't had anything like that happen to myself when I was on there, of course I did join near the end of the site's life but, I have seen a few others also mentioning having provocations from the mods there as well which is quite sad to here that.

...So much of FAC is outdated. Could really use a fresher upper.

yea, being an artist that uses refs myself, it really sucks that i cant track down the original artist...because some of the work floats out from zero-chan, then finds it's way onto photobucket and sadly still no praise to the original artist...so my best bet is to link the original work of my inspiration.

well except for one. I did one where i had my doll oc sitting infront of undertaker inspired by the picture of undertaker...sitting with a naked ciel. sorry but i would have gotten nasty flack for linking that pic on DA since they are harsh on the 'no porno' rule..and yeah that pic screamed pedo which disgusted me...but hey the undertaker in the shot was too damn epic not to draw with my oc. I loved the pose...just the naked ciel ruined it -sigh-

but hey least i mentioned what the picture looked like and why i DIDNT link it. xP

again..zero chan needs to step up it's damn game with picture crediting..so many jap artists are going nameless to those beautiful works!

Yeah, it's understandable that sometimes it's really hard to find the right artist to credit, but there's a difference between using a reference and copying/tracing, too. Typically, using a reference is to help with anatomy, pose, markings, etc - looking at another picture to make sure yours is accurate. Copy would be directly trying to reproduce that picture, which is perfectly fine as long as you're not claiming that you came up with it, you know?
