...How do you feel about the artistic ethics of screencap redraws from more realistic/live-action or live+CGI movies? It feels like using photo reference for a portrait to me, if the source is credited - But I've had a ballpoint drawing of a science fiction character from screencap ref accused of copyright violation by a mod of one of the communities I've been in before, so I was wondering what the feeling is around here.

I think it's fine if the source is credited and it's not claimed as your own. I mean, the realism animal portraits I do for commissions are copied from photographs. I don't really enjoy it, but it's not like it doesn't take just as much work- if not more.

among painters of portraits and other reputable artists, relying on photos has become pretty common. it's nice to have reference which sits still, and requires less skill in the capacity to visualize and retain in memory and image and then represent it on paper or canvas in your own way..

I don't object to the practice, I enjoy drawing from photos sometimes, but if a person becomes to dependent on that they can lose the element of creativity in their work. the art -rather than just technical skill- part of drawing from a photo is the life you add which could not be seen in the photo, making the art greater than the photo.

drawing photos is like fan art, it's good practice to build skills. I do it mostly in that spirit. I would like to increase my ability to accurately copy a photo because If I could accurately copy a phot I could also more accurately copy the pictures in my mind of things which exist only in my mind. I crave that technical skill and admire it in people who draw photos.

drawing a photo is just like drawing a still life. and just like fans art which aims to draw just like the original artist. technical skill in drawing a non-moving subject.

just as I think every doodle should be allowed here as part of the shared learning process t help us seek the encouragement we need to increase out skills, I think these things should be posted in that spirit, with references so the community can see what you are doing and give growth-producing feedback.

I see art sites as a place for learning, not a place to present only our perfected and fully original works.

if your draw an animal or plant from nature, referencing only nature, you are still copying the work of it's original creator, we do not create in a vacuum.

Yea looking at refs has helped me tons with strengthening my art skills.

But even then from all the pictures i looked at, i could not for the life of me do Vasto Lordes Ichigo; BUT the moment I bought the helmet on ebay for 100 ish dollars (When it was going for 500 on other sites, aka big score!) i was able to look at it from all angles and finally produced a picture of him that suits my satisfaction.

MMD has also helped in getting a better feel for characters, along with that, mmd has helped the cosplay community as well with crafting costumes. Just a year ago infact, i sent a mmd video of Lelouche black geass version to my friend to help her on her outfit of him she was making for a hall cosplay. It helped her greatly. ^^

the mmd community is also helping largly with poses. You know those wooden dolls they have? Well mmd has turned them into a cgi thing; and put them in poses for pose packs. Which in turn has helped me greatly in both drawing poses, AND requesting them. xP

So if some of you guys dont feel right with doing other pictures for poses, stop on by to MMD's turf and check it out.

Here's a few examples of what I mean:

I really wanna learn to use that MMD thing but I think it won't work well on my apple laptop I know there are ways to adapt it to apple systems but I think I don't have time to learn how right now, so I'm waiting till I have a more suitable machine or more time to learn.

Screencaps are excellent reference pictures, when you draw certain objects and you need to make them look recognizable as themselves.

For example, it's difficult to draw 1970 Ford Mustang like this https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/23/Ford_Mustang_Boss_302_1970.jpg without help of photo of such car.

I am definitely a Zelda fan. You did a nice job on that. Smile Reminds me of the style of an opening to an anime or something. I don't do anything cool like that... I just draw, hehe.

You have a sharp eye, cause the person who made that motion was inspired by the black butler 2 opening...but she put her own spin to the motions so as not to get copywright slapped at her.

Ureshii, this gal is amazing, and her motions are lovely! You should see the way she does her Sephiroth animations!

Dawn "subversive-imaginati" McKenna caused Storm-Artists.net to collapse due to her awful attitude when she treated everyone she disliked as excrements on the pavement. I heard she was once a dA helper, who had to be sacked back around 2005 or something.

You can see her ramblings on her Twitter page https://twitter.com/subimaginati - she's obsessed with wheelchairs, disability, and LGBT.
